East India Company - Ottawa Centre
In the early 1970s, newcomers to Canada, Kamal and Sudha Mehra, opened their first restaurant, Mehra’s Delicatessen, on McDermot Avenue across from Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre. The couple served a host of deli sandwiches — including the famous “Mehra’s Special” (5oz. of rolled corned beef and pastrami, topped with Sudha’s secret hot mustard and melted Swiss cheese). Kamal’s mother, Usha Mehra, immigrated to Canada a year later, and the family founded Winnipeg’s first North Indian restaurant, India Gardens, featuring all of Mrs. Mehra’s original recipes and Winnipeg’s first five-star buffet. Over the years, Kamal and Sudha Mehra enamoured thousands of diners with those dishes. In 1994, the Mehras decided to expand, and opened their York Avenue location in Winnipeg, naming it East India Company. Their dedication to South Asian cuisine and culture, through the legacy they created, was felt both locally and nationally. Today, Sudha Mehra and her children carry forward this legacy of cuisine through three five-star restaurants in Winnipeg and Ottawa.

"Over the last fifty years, East India Company restaurants have established themselves as providing exceptional fine-dining experiences. Our Garam Masala — a fine blend of spices roasted and ground to make the base to our most classic and flavourful curries — is a Mehra family recipe that dates back five generations and distinguishes our dishes from all others. Our chefs have been trained personally by Kamal and Sudha Mehra, and our Executive Chef, Nitin Mehra, sets the menus in each location, providing something spectacular and inspired, whether at lunch or dinner. Our restaurants are filled with centuries-old Indian wood carvings, paintings, and intricate tapestries — all chosen personally by Kamal Mehra, who had an undeniable passion."

We opted for a Lunch buffet which cost us around $23 including taxes. All of the items were pretty decent, no complaints at all. Stars of the show were Tandoori Chicken, Veggie Korma, Lamb Curry and Chana masala. I really wished they put a biriyani as well removing the plain basmati. Also if the butter chicken gravy was thickened a bit, it would be a hit. The vegetarian options were pretty high but instead of 2 items they could put another non-veg kabab. The desserts were amazing for sure. Do try the Gulab Jamun. All in all it's a decent deal for the money. Might visit again!
We went for the lunch buffet which was very fairly priced. Fantastic food selection, many vegetarian options. We ordered garlic Naan and it paired delishiously with the sauces from the buffet. The Korma especially was a hit for me. We did some back and fourth from our seats to the buffet a few times, the beautiful decor up front did interfere a little bit when we walked around with full plates. It wasn't at all busy, but I imagine if the place was full, anyone a little clumsy could spill around that tight spot. Overall a very good place and will be visiting again for that amazing vegetable Korma!
Very nice Indian food, great taste, nice ambience and very friendly staff. Did not find many options for veg in the buffet but a la carte is great. Must try mughlai planner. Vegetarian options: Great food options for vegetarians including paneer and biryani
The restaurant looks very nice with all the decor. The service was great, I didn't get the name of our server, but he checked up on us a lot and made sure we were comfortable and happy. Food was pretty good aswell if you pick the right stuff, some pieces of meat/lamb/chicken would be very nice and tendor while others kind of dry but that all comes down to your own skill at choosing. Price is honestly not bad for an all you can eat, compared to the all you can eat sushi places in Ottawa currently or Mandarin, this is a pretty good price point.
We went here as a group of 4 people with different nationalities and food preferences. To our joy ,experience was delightful with a vast array of delicious Indian dishes to choose from. The restaurant's authentic Indian decor, adorned with numerous artifacts and antiques, added a charming touch to the ambiance. The service was exceptional, with attentive staff members ensuring our needs were promptly met. The buffet offered an extensive variety of Indian cuisine, showcasing the rich flavors and diversity of the culture. While the overall experience was delightful, a small improvement suggestion would be to enhance the quality of the Naan included in the buffet. Nevertheless, this minor detail did not overshadow the overall positive experience. In summary, the buffet Indian restaurant provided a delightful culinary journey through Indian flavors, coupled with a warm and inviting atmosphere. Highly recommended for those seeking an authentic and diverse Indian dining experience.
We went for lunch and ate at the buffet. They have an a la carte menu available as well. The buffet area itself was clean and everything seemed fresh. The food was absolutely delicious! I can’t rave enough about it. Everything was seasoned so well and there wasn’t a single item i chose that i didn’t like. The vegetarian kormas were my personal favourites. They have a pretty extensive drink menu as well. Taj i believe was his name, our server, was very friendly and attentive as well. Would absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking for delicious indian food!
One of the best buffet places in Ottawa. Staffs are very friendly and u get the best butter chicken and Tandoor Chicken in town.Food: 5/5
Oustanding Indian restaurant ! I've only tried the lunch buffet so far, and I was impressed by the vast variety of food. Everything was freshly cooked, very fragrant and delicious.Food: 5/5
I was visiting Ottawa from outside the province, and I stopped to try the buffet. When I entered at 2 pm, the place was empty without anybody. After looking for some time, an emplyee came from the back and told me that they're open. As I was about to ask her about the buffet, she told me right away that they didn't have naan bread. And then she asked me to pay for the buffet before I even see it or sit, and I did while in shock. The food was very good. But the atmosphere was weird and uncomfortable, so I ate quickly and left.
Very good Indian food, especially the bread and cheese and butter chicken. I was attended by a super friendly person who spoke English, French and even risking Portuguese, excellent service and atmosphere.Food: 5/5
