Nourishing community by providing delicious goods in a traditional European atmosphere.
Let us tell you a bit About our History and About us!
My name is Siebe Koopman and I took four years of baking college in the Netherlands. In 2004 I moved here for a lovely girl named Joni. We are blessed with three sons and two daughters. We enjoy living in St. Albert and being active members of a Reformed Church.
Dutch Delicious is a fine Dutch Bakery and European Delicatessen.
Before Dutch Delicious came to be, there was Sherbrooke Bakery. Originally the bakery was owned by a Ukrainian baker who started around 1940, on the other side of the traffic circle (the NE side).
In 1961 Peter and Josephine Huppelschoten bought the bakery, and slowly added the Dutch groceries to its shelves, besides all the fine Pastries which Peter was used to doing back in the old country.
After being in the bakery for 25 years they decided the place was too small and moved to its present location at 13232-118th Ave. Including lots of giftware and the best lunches in town it was a very busy store, well known not only in Edmonton, but also in Red Deer and Calgary.
But the time came for them to slow down and they were able to sell the bakery in 2001 to John Vrieselaar and his two sisters Jacqueline and Elizabeth.
John, who did the baking, got up early every morning, and his two sisters stayed late every evening to run the store. After 5 long years they decided to move back to the family and home town Chilliwack, back to British Columbia.
In 2006 My wife and I bought the bakery and brightened it up by changing the layout of the store, restocking the shelves with Dutch imports.
The bread rack and pastry showcase also became fuller as we added more products.
In 2009 Dutch Delicious started ordering more European products, and German and Italian products were added to the assortment.
We have continued to grow since then, some of our highlights are;
2011 – We bought a brand new oven - along with being more efficient it is equipped with a Stone a Deck which creates more authentic European style breads – crispy on the outside and light and dense on the inside.
2011 – 2012
We have introduced all kinds of new products but, one that comes to top of mind is the Rustic rye bread, a real artistic loaf that ferments for a min of 8 hrs. We have also created convenient, authentic Dutch meals – from freezer to microwave, our clients can have a taste of Holland right at their own dinner table.
2012- We also bought a reach in Cheese cooler to make it more convenient for our customers to serve themselves and so we could display our delicious array of cakes we purchased our rotating cake show case.
