Dundurn Castle

Story

Dundurn Castle is a historic neoclassical mansion on York Boulevard in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The 18000sqft house took three years and $175,000 to build, and was completed in 1835. The forty room castle featured the latest conveniences of gas lighting and running water. It is currently owned by the City of Hamilton, which purchased it in 1900 for $50,000. The City has spent nearly $3 million renovating the site to make it open to the public. The rooms have been restored to the year 1855 when its owner Sir Allan Napier MacNab, 1st Baronet, was at the height of his career. Costumed interpreters guide visitors through the home, illustrating daily life from the 1850s. The Duchess of Cornwall, a descendant of Sir Allan MacNab, is the Royal Patron of Dundurn Castle.HistoryDundurn Castle, a Regency house, was completed in 1835 by architect Robert Charles Wetherell. MacNab purchased the property from Richard Beasley, one of Hamilton's early settlers, when financial difficulties forced Beasley to sell lands at Burlington Heights (present day Dundurn Park), and MacNab built Dundurn Castle on the foundations of Beasley's brick home. Once built, Dundurn Castle became famous all over the country for its grand entertainments. Sir John A. Macdonald and King Edward VII are among those who have been entertained there.

Dundurn Castle is less of a castle and more of a large Palace or mansion right in the heart of downtown Hamilton. It's a very interesting place to visit if you're into local or Canadian history and it's possible to go on a guided and informative tour of the inside for a reasonable price. For those of you that don't want to explore the inside, the grounds themselves are quite beautiful and it's a great place to spend some time walking around while enjoying the lovely scenery. For an even more interesting walk I recommend exploring the castle grounds and then crossing the street and exploring the historic cemetery as well where you'll find some amazing crypts of famous Hamiltonians. There is free parking at the castle and it's very easily accessible from the Highway that runs through the city. There are some great parks and other hiking trails nearby and it's a great place to visit along with a few other of Hamilton’s more natural and historical attractions.

Very interesting. Great tour guide. Almost an hour tour in length. Price reasonable. Only complaint...tour group is too large. They take up to 18 people at once. Sections of the house too tight for such a crowd. Smaller tours should be arranged for your admission price and enjoyment.

It always amazes me that slaves will celebrate their masters. McNab and company are all tyrants. Since the founding of Hamilton as a Police-Settlement the same proprietors have controlled all the wealth. Why do we celebrate the greedy psychopaths??
