Story

In a world of derivatives, it is a rare designer who looks not to others but to other ways of doing. This, first and foremost, is the premise upon which Pamela Coulston has built her design aesthetic and her company Disegno Fine Jewellery.

Pamela’s passion for and ability to execute exceptionally detailed drawings in both her art and design are captured in the naming of her company Disegno. In the Italian artistic tradition, disegno carries a more complex meaning than just ‘design’; it involves both the ability to make the drawing and the intellectual capacity to invent the design. This capacity goes beyond the usurping of other jeweller’s designs, it is the commitment to finding fresh ideas in unlikely sources, far from the realm of jewellery: vertebrae, car headlights, motorcycle hand-grips, the span of a girder, a range of mountains, a hyperbolic paraboloid, an elastic band. Nature and industrial design writ small.

In an era of rocketing gold prices, Pamela steadfastly maintains her belief that jewellery is both a visual and tactile pleasure. Her jewellery is renown for exacting attention to detail and the quality of finish. It is also coveted for the inclusion of substantial quantities of precious metals.

Already achieving national and international attention for her designing (with clients as far afield as Africa), in 2007 Pamela opened her first boutique in Ottawa, Canada’s capital. Within three years, her success led to the opening of a new boutique in a highly coveted area of that city. She is a trusted and personable jeweller who takes the time to understand her client’s desires in the creation of bespoke designs.

Pamela previously enjoyed a career as an International Development Consultant for such organizations as Unicef and the World Water Council. She was a successful Freelance Writer, reporting primarily for national Canadian press and known for her ability to track down stories in remote areas of the world. She has filed stories floating on ice floes in the Arctic Ocean, trekked some of the world’s highest mountain ranges, took notes on bear behavior in rain forest downpours -- and made publishing deadlines every time.
