Crawford Lake Conservation Area

Story

Crawford Lake Conservation Area is a conservation area owned and operated by Conservation Halton near the community of Campbellville in Milton, Halton, Ontario, Canada. It is categorized as a regional environmentally sensitive area, an Ontario Area of Natural and Scientific Interest, and part of the Niagara escarpment world biosphere reserve. The conservation area contains Crawford Lake, a reconstructed Iroquoian village, and several hiking trails.A study made in 1971 determined that the lake was meromictic, which makes the lake a prime site for archaeological and geochemical studies. Using pollen analysis, reconstruction of the history of the area over several hundred years was possible. Moreover, geochemical analysis of sediment cores has allowed for the reconstruction of the pollution history of the area. This analysis revealed the trends and sources of air pollution over approximately 150 years. The pollen analysis revealed corn pollen, indicating a possible Iroquoian settlement nearby, as corn was a staple of their agriculture. A search of the surrounding area found a grindstone, which would have been used in such a village. Digs of the area just south of the grindstone revealed the foundations of an eleven-longhouse village. The village, thought to be inhabited by either the Wendat (Huron) or Neutral Confederacy peoples, has been reconstructed in the conservation area and is based on many years of research by archaeologists, who continue to study the site. The reconstructed fifteenth century Iroquoian village is open seasonally and for special events. The site offers interpretive programs of Iroquoian life and culture and has three reconstructed longhouses and a palisade, although the original village did not have a palisade. One longhouse is used to display contemporary indigenous art and artifacts recovered from past digs. The longhouses are representative of life in the village at the time, with fireplaces, fur-lined bunk beds, and various items used at the time.

Crawford lake conservation area has something for everyone; a short, easy but beautiful walk around Crawford lake itself along the wooden elevated walkways (perfect for families and people scared of getting dirty), the Escarpment hike-a bit of a more challenging hike along rocky paths and Limestone gaps with steep glorious views, and then there are even more trails deep into the woods. The further you get from the main parking area, the more wildlife you are likely to see, the closer areas are a bit noisy. The eager hiker can even walk to Rattlesnake point apparently, but we didn't get that far. For families and history buffs alike the Longhouses are an amazing treat. Sitting in the serenity of the cedar thatched building, listening to the wind, touching the furs and smelling the cedar, one can easily imagine life here 600 years ago. Really cool. There are tours daily too and the staff are incredibly knowledgeable. Two thumbs up!

Great place for a stroll through the woods! Crawford Lake offers different levels of hiking difficulty, depending on how aggressively you typically hike. All trails from the parking lot are basic and great for family outings! Some trails are smooth enough for strollers, if you have young ones, or wheel chairs if that's the case. But if you prefer a little more challenge then head deeper onto the trials and you'll find rocks and roots to hope over and a fairly challenging trail that heads right to Rattlesnake point! (which is another fantastic hiking place) They have enough trails to keep you active for a short while or a long 2 hour walk, whichever you prefer. the views here are half decent, there are some lookout points along the trails but mostly you will want to come to check out the amazing native displays they have reconstructed! Crawford Lake offers some historical background information as well as a super cool village you can walk through and check out what life used to be like for the natives way back when! Definitely worth a day trip for the family or on your own!

Great trails that are a nice mix of inclines, single file paths and uphill hikes. Well travelled with many other hikers around. The trails will be completed much faster then the estimated time on the maps if you keep a brisk walking pace.

A gem. Love the Crawford Lake and Hardwood forest trails. Wooden carvings along the trails are fabulous. The Iroquois village reconstruction and archaeological site is excellent. Friendly staff. One place that you should visit. Entry fee was about $7.50 per adult, but worth it.

To be honest, we didn't explore Crawford Lake too much. Although the long houses are pretty cool. But hiking here from Rattlesnake Point along the trails is great! There are some picnic tables here where you can stop for lunch or just a rest before heading back along the trails. There's also a store where you can get a cold drink or a treat. You'll also find washrooms and a drinking fountain here.
