For an area with few trees, this group campground is a bit of an oasis! It comes with a few tables, large grill for charcoal briquettes useful when no fires are allowed, water, bear boxes, and a well maintained out house. There are several spots for hammocks near the campsite and plenty of room for tents. It was pretty windy the first day we were here, so be cautious about using an EZ-Up. The wind blew ours away in the first 20 minutes! It's a great place for stargazing and only a minute or two from the Craters of the Moon visitor center. It's a great stop!
Here are some pictures of the campsite. It is right at the entrance across from the Visitors center which is open. We did not stay here but here is some current info and pictures. There is currently no water at the campgrounds. It is fascinating landscape and geology but I can’t imagine that tents would be very comfortable. It is $8 to rent a campsite or $4 for seniors so it’s a good price.
Fantastic place to camp, we watched shooting stars all night, and you can easily see the milky way. The ground is the color of coffee grounds, and it is like opal colored volcanic glass, with beautiful green particles. There are petrified logs amongst the lava flows, and there are deep underground lava tubes you can explore. Such a fantastic place! Using the imagination, it cold be like camping on the moon! Go there, you WONT be disappointed!
•••• Well worth the money. This group campsite has plenty of space for your whole flock! Tons of tiny hike trails for kids to play along. Trees enough to keep you shaded. There was virtually no light pollution. If you are looking for that perfect spot to view the Milky Way, you seriously need look no further. The latrine stays so very well maintained, the water runs cold here. You are gonna love this place. Trust me. You NEED to camp here. ••••
Craters of the Moon is probably not the glamorous camping experience you might envision, the spots are fairly sized but smaller than larger campgrounds. They're a "first come, first serve" basis, you'll have access to the trails and shop not too far a distance away. Great views at night, very hot in the summer, nice in the spring and fall. It's an amazing place formed from volcanic activity and is a unique camping experience.
The campsite could use more shade, but it is very spacious with many tables. There is a large grill and fire pit.
We really enjoyed our time there in the secluded group camping area, it was quiet and private. Now if they could only do something about that wind..
Stayed two nights nice place. Clean restrooms and friendly staff
Absolutely Amazing Family Trip!!
