Colonial Michilimackinac
"Revolutionary Times. Treasures from the past come to life at this 18th-century fort and fur trading village, reconstructed based on historic maps and more than 60 years of archaeological excavations. As you walk through the site, you are stepping back in time to 1777, as the British prepared to end the American Revolution with a decisive blow. Here, you will see and hear how residents of this fur trading community participated in that campaign while defending their homes from new threats. Historical interpreters representing voyageurs, British soldiers, and French-Canadian merchant families are stationed throughout the fort to answer your questions and perform demonstrations. Located on the shore of the Straits of Mackinac. #thisismackinac"

We were on a visit to the area for a few days. This is a self guided tour to enjoy with several reenactments from staff in costumes, making history come alive. We spent the morning going through many of the buildings and talks, left to meet up with friends for lunch and re-entered later in the day to continue our visit. We did not realize there is so much history in this area of Michigan and the staff was knowledgeable to answer questions about life in this fort. If you enjoy history, this is well worth taking a day to visit. We look forward to a return visit.
We arrived at the parking lot shortly after the Fort closed for the day, mostly intent on a different view of the bridge we'd just crossed. Luckily, the lot appears to be open independent of the fort, and doesn't require paying admission or anything like that. Pretty cool little area with a small beach. Obviously an excellent view of Mighty Mac, but also some other amazing historical stuff to see in the area.
The fort was awesome. So much to see. The historical educators were awesome. Full of knowledge and always willing to engage the kiddos. Our favorite was the blacksmith since what kid doesn't like fire. Overall a great experience and a ton of archeological information. I highly recommend this for any age. Only downside was the directions took us across the bridge and back again to enter on the other side of the road. Make sure you turn off before the bridge.
This is a great fort to visit! So much for kids to see and touch. Everyone is so knowledgeable and always in character. You definitely step back into history when you walk through the gate! Definitely a must see!!!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
My recent visit here was to attend Fort Fright, a delightful event featuring story tellers, a haunted house, a demon walk, fortune teller, werewolf walk, and much more. There were treats such as popcorn, peanut brittle, hot cider, and shortbread cookies. It was well attended but it was easy to keep your distance if you so desired. The workers that staffed the event were terrific! The story tellers each had a seating area around a fire pit. The Demon Walk was our favorite feature. And of course, the night views of the water and the bridge were amazing. The gift shop was open and had a nice assortment of items with something for every age and price range. Will need to update this when I visit the fort during its normal operating season.
This place was a surprise. It looked small so I expected a quick visit. After leaving hours later we all want another visit to spend more time. We've gone to several living history sites many times. This is a new favorite. I'll get the negative out of the way first. For a summer Saturday I would have expected more people in character around the places. Also, despite the wardrobe and knowledge they didn't stay in character much. When asked about the birch canoe a trader was with, he explained it was just a fiberglass canoe painted to look the part. Of course we knew that, so that took away a little of the immersion. These are really my only negatives. On the good side, the faithfulness of reconstruction was very good. I also like the feel of being in the fort during its time relatively fresh construction rather than being in a place that's now 250 years old, degraded, repaired many times, etc. This place gives a real feel for what the people of the time would have seen and smelled it as. The people we did encounter had great knowledge of the place, activities, and history. Seeing artifacts found alongside a reconstruction also gave a good context the kids could understand well enough to get excited. All in all, a fantastic place we'll certainly visit again. My negatives hardly add up to a whole star off, but I couldn't give a partial star. I'd easily give 4.8/5. Pictures don't do this place justice, seeing it in person exceeds expectation.
We've seen this place from the bridge every time we cross, finally stopped to check it out! What an awesome experience! We got to step back in time to experience the life of the British, French, and the Native Americans during the 7 year war. The buildings are replicas of what stood there along with some original works that archeologists dug up.
We had so much fun walking around the fort. It was stroller friendly and our 3 yr old loved seeing all the "old stuff". Incredible views and awesome staff dressed in colonial garb.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$11–15
So happy I stopped here it was so worth the trip to see this place. The staff was absolutely wonderful. They were Very informative and had a vast knowledge of the History here and were more than happy to answer any questions I had. They have a live musket demonstration as well as many others. This is definitely for families or anyone who loves a good historical experience. I highly recommend coming to spend the day up here. Plan on at least 2-3 hours to really soak it in all in or an hour and a half to tour the place and just look.
I lived in this little city for a year as a kid. We used to come down to what is now this park and sit in the lighthouse and under the bridge. The view of the Straits and the Bridge is amazing, peaceful and engaging. The park is clean, with tables, a gazebo, benches. People, please clean up after dogs! It's also a great place for rock hunting. But oh! The people watching is primo! I still love this location. Lots of winter memories. Sitting under the bridge-freezing. The park has two gift shops. Clean public restrooms and a nice walkway.
