Very cool piece of Coast guard history. You start the tour by watching a short video of the history of the ice breaker and the importance of it. You then follow a self gilded tour through the ship seeing crew quarters, an engine room, mess area, the bridge and other parts of the ship. If you are going to go make sure to wear sneakers or comfortable shoes since you will be climbing up and down ladders.
I am fascinated by freighters, and I absolutely loved this ship tour. The way they had it roped off, to walk through/up/down the different rooms was nicely done. It was very interesting to see how these men and women later on went about their daily life on board and everything is so outdated on the ship, it was neat. It was awesome to be able to have access and walk through what was once an active ship. I will definitely go back again and probably again.
It was a big ship museum and enjoyed it very much. One of the cheaper attractions here. Wish the upper deck was open but the midge flies made it terrible. Do not recommend if you have tiny tots as there is a lot of up and down ladders.
Cool ship to self guide tour as a family. Would recommend not bringing loose items as you have to go up and down some ladders inside the ship.
The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable and I loved hearing about the history of the icebreaker through the information given by staff, the videos playing in certain areas and the rooms decorated to look as it did when in operation. Overall a great experience and it even had a wonderful view of the Mackinaw bridge and island
Decommissioned in 2006, she now resides at her namesake home of Mackinaw City, Michigan, and is open for public tours, educational tours, overnight encampments and group events. Informative displays and tour guides will tell you the story of the Mackinaw’s 62-year career of breaking ice on the Great Lakes and serving as a goodwill ambassador throughout the region. While aboard you will visit the Mess Deck, Captains Quarters, Bridge, Engine Room, Ward Room, Sick Bay and so much more.
Awesome tour of an icebreaker vessel!! Boat was only retired in 2006, so is still in really good shape. Cool tour for most of the crew stations berths, kitchen, engine room. Only took about an hour and that included stopping to talk to volunteers. Make this a stop on your trip up here.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNoPrice for adult entry$11–15
We really enjoyed seeing a ship like this first hand. To see the history and how they have preserved things on the ship were amazing. Even if you aren't into boats/ships, a very fascinating tour. A must see when in the area.
Worth a visit if you’re in the area. Lots of places to explore nearby. Parks and history are everywhere.
It's worth the money, just do it Very cool piece of history with great staff/volenteers who want to educate you. I took my 2 & 8 year olds, they loved it as much as I did.
