We went here because we wanted to grab a quick bite before heading to the beach. I ordered the noodle soup with braised beef. It was served piping hot, but the meat was still rubbery. The broth was bland and greasy. On the other hand, the appetizers were not a disappointment. The grilled abalone was tasty as well as the fried chicken.
Food was a disappointment, everything looks great, the place is cute, cutlery, plate ware, but food was really bland. I order the beef noddles and the first thing is the soup was bland not beefy taste whatsoever! I had to add salt ! The beef was a bit tough. I order a side of charcoal squid which wasn't!! It was covered with pepper and cumin powder really bad and way to strong. I was looking forward to this place but now I can say I won't be back ever or recommend it to anyone. Service was cordial but sort of absent both girls were watching something on their laptop and it was loud.
Chi Men is still my go to place when I crave a good noodle soup. I really like their sauerkraut beef noodle soup, because it's quite sour and also has just enough spiciness. I also go with the thicker noodles, and they're very tasty and just a bit chewy. They have good grilled meats and veggies, too.
Good looking place. Pricy food. The Taiwanese beef noodles did not taste like Taiwanese food at all. The Chinese noodles seemed to be ok for my friend.
Its another cold rainy day in Vancouver and you are looking for a hot meal to warm you up. You walk into Chi Men for a delightful treat. It's cozy inside, with drawings of hip noodle mongers staring you down. You order a noodle soup, say beef. It arrives in 10-15 mins... Ahhhhhh that feeling of coming back to life
Visited this tiny but warm restaurant few days, awesome soup base and BBQ skewers. Great Chinese noodle place to go on Denman!
Everything was coated in seasonings, I couldn't even feel the taste of the food. When we left our stomach was upset. Not recommended!
Visited on a weekday lunch with coworkers. The restaurant was completely empty and it was during lunch hours, we all gave each other a weird look but decided to walk in anyways. Food: Overall soup is on the bland side and is nothing special compared to the many other noodle shops around the city. However, the noodle was very chewy and I really enjoyed it. The price was very high at 15 dollars per bowl for the Lanzhou noodle, and overall, I believe it is not justified. Service: There was only 1 person running the restaurant when we were there. The service was less than mediocre. Soon after we sat down she walked over and asked if we were ready. We said we needed a few more minutes. You would've expected her to give us a few minutes but instead she just stood at the same place looking at us until we ordered. When we asked about the appetizers, she said "oh we don't have a lot of things in stock." When asked what the whole squid is, she barely had a clue. TLDR; bland soup, good chewy noodle, bad service, expensive, not worth it.
Very flavourful and tasty. The home made noodle great in texture, chewy and full with flour aroma. The soup is great but not heavy and oily different than Japanese ramen. Certainly recommended for give a try
Visited this place at lunch time on a Saturday. There was no wait and only one other pair in the restaurant I respect the concept of this place as a Chinese noodle place and alternative to the many ramen places nearby. The restaurant is very clean and nicely designed. Tables are spaced apart, so you don't feel crowded. We ordered the traditional beef noodle soup #1 and the garlic pickled beef noodle soup #2. Noodles here take a little longer to come out when compared to ramen places, but that is because the broths here are different. Sadly, we had to send both bowls back the first time as the noodles were not cooked through. The noodles are either dried or frozen and not fresh like in some of the ramen places you can visit. When our noodles came the second time, the noodles were cooked good. The traditional beef noodle came out rather flat in flavour and tasted watered down. The garlic pickled beef noodle was far more flavourful and was the better of the two, but not mind-blowing. All in, a good effort with room for improvement.
