Chateau Lacombe Hotel

Story

The Chateau Lacombe is a hotel in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.DescriptionOne of Edmonton's major hotels located in Downtown Edmonton, the Chateau Lacombe was first opened on 28 December 1966 by the Canadian Pacific Hotels Corporation. It features 307 rooms in the 24-storey cylindrical tower topped by Edmonton's only revolving restaurant, La Ronde, which offers sweeping views of both the city's downtown core and the North Saskatchewan river valley below as it makes a full rotation every 90 minutes.Canadian Pacific Hotels bought Canadian National Hotels, which owned and operated the nearby historic Hotel Macdonald. After CP Hotels and Resorts purchased Fairmont Hotels, the newer Chateau Lacombe was sold to investors and it was rebranded the Crowne Plaza Chateau Lacombe. It was sold again in mid-2010 for $47.8m to local company Hargate Properties who retained the affiliation with Crowne Plaza Hotels but the new owners went into receivership in November 2011. The purchase of the hotel by Kevyn Frederick in 2010 later was discovered to be part of a large mortgage fraud in the Edmonton area. The hotel was bought out of receivership by the new ownership group for $27.5m in 2012, and in May 2013 the hotel was relaunched as an independent hotel.NameThe hotel is named after Father Albert Lacombe, an Oblate missionary and pioneer priest instrumental in the foundation and settlement of Alberta in the late 1800s.

As of right now, I am less than impressed with the hotel overall. We booked two rooms on July 31st, for one night, 5 guests. The check-in process was lengthy and seemed more complicated than it needed to be. I understand this can happen when booking through a third party website, and choosing to pay when we arrive. We were informed on our booking confirmation that check-in was at 3:00pm, but when we arrived shortly after our rooms were not ready, so they made other rooms available for us. The rooms themselves were alright. They were comfortable and clean. We only had two pillows on each bed which I thought was a little odd, and no mini-fridge in one room. Other than that, the room had everything else we needed. We didn't complain, as we were only there for a night and these are things we can deal with. Not the end of the world for us, and not the main reason for the rating of this review. The checkout process was also lengthy. They kept saying my VISA credit card was a debit card, which it is not, which further confused us and the staff that were handling our checkout, and made things more complicated. I am now struggling to get my damage deposit back, as it has now been a week of back and forth. We left the room in good shape, nothing broken or even terribly dirty as we were only there for one night. I was told to wait until Friday to see it come back, still nothing, not even a pending transaction as I always see for a few days with a deposit. Today, I have been told to call my bank, as they claim they have processed everything on their end. Once I hear from my bank I am currently on hold, I have been instructed to call the hotel again. This is wasting a lot of my time, but I will go through the motions to give it a chance. One super positive note is that the food at the main floor restaurant was fantastic! We all really enjoyed it! Pending on whether or not the deposit situation gets resolved, I could consider revising my review.
If I could give no stars I would. We were at this hotel for fashion week. Upon arriving, a bellhop offered to help unload in the -30C at night. He rolled out a rack and left me unpacking my car. He then brought it to our room while we parked. The parking lot is in disarray with construction to fix falling roofs and driving made you think you were being skill tested. The parking elevators were dirty and old. We got into the check in desk where they proceeded to hold 5 days worth of rooms on my card leaving me no room to spend and the desk person was rude. The elevators going up, were full of hand prints and greasy fingers prints everywhere. Entering our room, it was old, broken and without an ounce of updating. The bath water was constantly running, the sink water shuts off within 5 seconds of using it. There was a fan in the bathroom so, it was hot and musty. I have to say the bed was comfortable, even with knowing I was sleeping next to a fire hazard of an open electrical outlet behind the bed I hated my stay. I wanted to leave but my daughter was in their venue for the fashion show. I have camped out better. Never coming back.
Extremely nice and caring people. Room was clean and temperature was perfect. Coffee amenities hit the spot as well. For a performing musician who played at the star lite down the road they hooked up an excellent deal as well. Highly recommend!
Stayed here for a work event and was less than impressed with the room. Unless you upgrade, the standard room is below mediocre. For the location, my colleague and I expected more. Paint was peeling in the washroom, one of the mattresses was sucken and the bathroom tap barely worked. Glad we didn't pay for the room because I've seen nicer motel rooms. Sad. The food in the lounge was good and the buffet breakfast was the saving grace for a 2 star review.
The value for the stay suited my needs. The location is perfect for what I required. It's could use some modern plugs for devices and phone charging. Parking should be included with your stay if you park outside unprotected!Rooms: 4/5
I had to make a last minute booking from overseas for my brother who was caring for our critically ill parent. Lorena went over and above helping me with the booking which was a bit complicated and then giving my brother extra special treatment on arrival. Thanks for helping us during this tough time. It made all the difference for my brother to have a comfy place to rest.
Service was very disappointing took forever to check in. Was late to wedding ceremony. Husband missed whole ceremony. Asked to be put on same floor as daughter due to babysitting grand baby they said we could upgrade to same floor. Then I left my husband arrived to finished check in when we arrived back to hotel after wedding turns out they did not put us on the floor we requested. They still charged us for the upgrade. We will not stay there again. Very disappointed.
Came here for our anniversary weekend. Get a River View Room, it's lovely. We were on premium floor with access to the lounge for breakfast and snacks. The beds were firm, the pillows soft and the room was quite clean. The only other thing is that as jn previous reviews the rooms are quite dated.Rooms: 3/5
Room had a cigarette smoke smell that they tried to hide with some kind of perfume. Truck could not fit their parking, so they let you park across the road in a parking lot. I asked if I can rather park in front of the hotel where it is more visible, but they refused. They let me sign a indemnity form for any loss or damage to my vehicle. Needless to say, there was a break in attempt in my vehicle although nothing was left in the vehicle. My guess is that it is a regular thing that they get break ins at that parking lot. On a positive note, the view was incredible and the bed was great. I will however never stay there again.
Previously was nice hotel. Now neglected. No breakfast restaurant. Fitness room closed. Business center closed. Housekeeping only every three days so a normal four day business trip gets no service. Room decor is clean but from the 80s.Rooms: 3/5
