Gare Centrale in Montreal is a major transportation hub with a great location, but unfortunately, I found the overall experience quite underwhelming, especially considering how important and busy this train station is.nnThe biggest challenge is the accessibility. If you’re travelling with luggage, be prepared for a bit of a struggle because there are many stairs and it can be difficult having to pull suitcases up and down. For a major train station that welcomes so many travellers, I expected a much easier and more convenient setup, especially for people carrying heavy bags, seniors, or anyone with mobility challenges.nnI also found the station surprisingly lacking in staff presence. There didn’t seem to be many employees available to help with questions or provide assistance, which can make navigating the station more frustrating, especially for visitors unfamiliar with the layout.nnAnother disappointment was the lack of activity and services. For such a busy transportation hub, some shops and food options seem to close early, while others appear to have reduced hours or are no longer operating. It gives the station a quieter and less welcoming feeling than you would expect from a major city terminal.nnThe location itself is convenient, and it does connect travellers to important destinations, but the overall experience feels dated and not very passenger-friendly.nnWith better accessibility, more consistent services, more staff support, and improved amenities, Gare Centrale could be so much better. It serves its purpose, but it definitely has room for improvement.
We arrived at the Montreal Central Station - Gare Centrale by train VIA Rail. This major transportation hub is the primary inter-city rail station in Montreal, serving VIA Rail Canada trains to various Canadian cities. The station is located in the heart of downtown Montreal and is directly connected to the city's extensive underground pedestrian network, as well as multiple subway Metro stations. It is also directly connected to the Queen Elizabeth Hotel and the city's underground shopping network. The station is big and clean, and you can easily find several cafes and restaurants there.
Due to personal reasons, I needed to return to Toronto earlier than planned just by myself, so I chose to travel with Via Rail.nBoth the ticketing staff at the station and the staff in the business lounge were very friendly. The Lounge itself isn't very large, but on the day of my visit the station wasn't crowded, so the space felt quiet and comfortable.nPassengers simply waited for the boarding announcement and then headed to the platform when it was time, which made the whole process smooth and stress-free.nOverall, a pleasant and calm experience before departure.
Took the VIA Rail from Toronto to Montreal. The station was small but had a stylish vibe. I liked how you could get picked up or dropped off under a covered area—super convenient. It was late at night so I couldn’t really look around, but I’d love to come back during the day and explore a bit more.
Conveniently located in the heart of the city, this station is clean, neat, and highly organized. The only major downside is the lack of an elevator between the train platforms and the main terminal building; the escalator is your only option. This makes navigating the station quite challenging if you are traveling with heavy luggage or an infant in a stroller. On the bright side, the VIA Rail staff was incredibly helpful and assisted us with managing our bags on the escalator.
