Forty-six years ago a great tradition of selling cars with integrity and quality customer service was born in Cape Breton.
That practice started when Melvin White, an enterprising man from Glace Bay, started working in auto sales at the Sydney dealership, Steel City Sales. For a decade, Melvin worked for the dealership then decided the time had come to open his own used car lot. It was then that Mel White Auto Sales came into existence in Glace Bay.
White's business soon gained a reputation for selling good, affordable pre-owned vehicles. The dealership did well and expanded into a successful establishment, operated by White, his wife Carmella and their four sons, Cordell, Bill, Darin and Dale.
After many years in retail automotive industry, Mel's sons decided to go into business for themselves. In 1999, Bill, Darin, Dale and their father joined forces to open Caper Auto Sales Limited, named after the place and people they had known and loved.
Like Mel's previous business, Caper Auto became renowned for its ability to sell quality pre-owned and trade-in vehicles. Backed by a powerful combination of 98 years of experience, service and success, Caper Auto Sales has become a distinctive and cherished fixture in the community.
"Buying from Mel White and his sons has become something of a tradition in the area," says manager Darin White. "Many people have bought cars from our father in the past. They remembered the good service and fine cars they got and they have returned over the years with their children and grandchildren to buy more, first from him, then from us."
Ralph Hoffman is a repeat client of the White family. He can attest to the exceptional service and excellent vehicles offered by the family. "My dad and my two brothers all bought from Mel White and Caper Auto Sales," he says. "Two reasons we keep buying cars from them is that their customer service has been so great and the price is always right."
Bill, acts as automotive buyer for the growing dealership. He believes the reason generations of people have come to his family when purchasing a vehicle is simple: " We service everybody after the sale. We treat them like we would want to be treated and, in return, we get their loyalty and their business. We wouldn't be in business for very long if we didn't take care of our customers after the sale is made."
Not only does Caper Auto Sales service what they sell, they also supply thoughtful amenities for their customers during servicing, such as providing loaner cars to clients while their vehicle is being worked on, or having an employee drive a client where they need to go. Financing is also available to all customers, who will be well looked after by finance manager Dale White.
All of Caper Auto's pre-owned Vehicles are in top state. People who purchase a vehicle from the dealership have the satisfaction of knowing that their car was completely reconditioned from top to bottom before it went out onto the lot. Caper Auto engages the services of well-qualified professionals from Lee's Service Centre, located in the Caper Auto building, to oversee every aspect of the maintenance and conditioning of your vehicle.
