Canadian Tire

It is probably the largest Canadian Tire in St John's. It is decorated beautifully with a nautical theme. There are beautiful model boats hung from the rafters all over the store and they have the street names of some popular St John streets naming their isles

At this Canadian tire, you are assumed a criminal until proven otherwise. You have to be "buzzed" out if you leave without buying something and during peak times there's a security guard actually asking to see your receipt after you've been checked through the cash register. Not going to happen. It's laughable how a retailer will react to its own obvious loss prevention issues with such a disregard for basic customer service. For starters, try changing the culture of apathy amongst your own staff. Pointing out the aisle to seasonal goods is not as laborious as an associate may think and should not interfere too much with your 11:07am daydream.

The store probably has a great selection of products (those occasions when I'm willing to scour every aisle results in usually getting what I need, or an even better substitute) but it's hard to find anything - the sections are organized counter-intuitively, products are often in a different section that one would expect, their staff seem to mean well but are never around to ask for help (one time we actually found someone at the help desk, we waited behind the customer getting assistance, and as soon as he thanked the staff and left to go get the item he was looking for, that staff member left the desk, right in front of us), and their 'directory' has never been remotely helpful - the most recent visit I found it pushed back from the entrance semi-hidden at the end of an aisle...apparently because the big touch-screen display was stuck in a non-interactive demo mode. The website is only marginally easier to use (and at least functional because I'm not depending on their hardware but my own home computer, browser software, etc). In short "Crappy Tire" has worked hard to earn its derisive nickname, and my experiences do nothing to change that perception. It will be with MUCH reservation if and when I ever cross the threshold of this store again, and probably only because I have exhausted all my alternatives to it.

Store is full of merchandise. They have a huge seasonal department and garden centre. Staff are courteous and friendly. One of the biggest Canadian Tire stores I've been in. I also like how the main aisles are named after local streets in St. John's.

Felt like a criminal, rent-a-cop security at the exit wanted to check each shopper's receipt to confirm their purchases. Creates a backlog at the exit. Last time shopping there.
