I love a good veal sandwich and for decades I enjoyed the best sandwich which was at another very small restaurant. This restaurant opened and closed very quickly in this area. One day a colleague took me for lunch at California Sandwiches and I tried the veal sandwich. It was great. I went back again on my own and order an external hot sandwich as the first one I ordered was a HOT sandwich but wasn't hot enough for me. The extra hot was very good. A few days later I went back for another one and was disappointed that the sandwich as not as good as the last extra hot I had. If your a chain restaurant customers expect constancy in the food. One thing I noticed was that it was a popular place for take out. The service is quick and the restaurant clean if you decide to sit down. They also have picnic tables outside under trees to enjoy a summer lunch outdoors. Its not a cheap sandwich at over $12 without any extra toppings. However, it beats a meal at McDonalds ,which today has priced itself out of the market for many, for quality of the food and taste. I defiantly recommend their veal sandwiched. Ill have to try their chicken the next time.
Amazing, huge and tasty sandwiches. I has the veal sandwich and my wife had the eggplant. Freshly prepared and bursting with flavour, a welcome treat that we thoroughly enjoyed. We will be back for sure. Vegetarian options: Lots of veggie options including an eggplant sandwich Parking: Easy parking right beside the store, a big factor on a rainy day Dietary restrictions: Good selection of diabetic choices, mostly veggie toppings, easy to remove the bun carbs, still a very tasty meal. Served on a plate with cutlery available.
Huge veil sandwich very tender meat, bread is soft, very filling but not too heavy on the tummy - long story short, perfect. Match it with pickled olives with peppers, so good.
Simply the best veal sandwich period. the others are excellent too. They have the best sauce hands down. I used to go to the location on Claremont from 1984 to 1992. We could see into the kitchen and there would be a big pot of sauce and I believe it was the grandmother putting her experience and love into that sauce. Nostalgia and great food at the same time. Sounds like heaven.
Ordered some catering from this location, placed my order within 5 days of pickup. Half tray of meat lasagna and a tray of veal and chicken for sandwiches. Frankie and the team took amazing care of me, communication was excellent and I received exactly what I ordered and then some! We especially loved the fresh buns on the side, and the sauce on the side to avoid things getting soggy in the trays. The lasagna had a wonderful taste and there were lots of leftovers brought home from the weekend. Fantastic experience start to finish and highly recommend for your catering needs!!
Best Sandwiches in town!! Close your eyes and pick anyone!! They are all made to perfection!! Best California Sandwich shop in Ontario!! Medium Veal with mushrooms is my personal favorite! A must stop for everyone!!!Food: 5/5
Wow have times changed. The last veal sandwich was from the California on Queensway in 2015. The Barrie location makes a good size sandwich for 12 bucks, sure. But then they really skin you on the toppings ! Mushrooms way overpriced, onions way overpriced, peppers way overpriced. 1.74 for a can of pop ! Veal sandwich with above and pop $20.85 ! The veal itself is tender but to be honest pretty bland without any sauce. The sauce itself is average with a faint tomato taste. The mushrooms are just ok as are the onions and peppers. Overall filling but with little flavour to speak of. This is a try it once place, wait a year, then go back. At the end of the day the price does not reflect flavour.
I'm a lifelong fan of California Sandwiches and I've eaten at the Dufferin location for years as well as the Chesswood location. When Frankie and the crew came to Barrie and opened up shop here I was excited to know I had a Cali in my own backyard. The food is absolutely incredible, always consistent and fresh, the staff is friendly and clean. Even see Frankie out cleaning his own widows from time to time this owner leads by example and his food is proof that he's great at what he does he inspires great people to make great food. I'll be a lifer for sure keep up the good work Cali Barrie. See you again soon
Do yourself a favour, stick to the Toronto locations to avoid disappointment. The sandwiches are very small, the sauce - I am not sure but it’s not the same. Also I understand staffing is difficult but it was not busy - we ordered and were charged for cheese - but I guess it was missed? I don’t recommend this location Barrie The two locations we frequent are Etobicoke and York Mills.
A group of us went up to Barrie for the weekend and decided to stop at California Sandwiches. We heard they make exceptional sandwiches. All of us were absolutely not disappointed. We can’t wait for our next trip to visit California sandwiches again. Congratulations. Keep up the good work!
