Blackberry River Inn

Story

The Blackberry River Inn is a colonial mansion at 538 Greenwonds Road West in Norfolk, Connecticut. Constructed in 1763, the mansion was listed on the National Register of Historic Places under its historic name in 1984.HistoryThe first parts of what is known as Blackberry River Inn today were erected in 1763. It was extensively renovated in the 1920s according to designs of architect Alfredo S.G. Taylor, an architect from New York City who summered in Norfolk. Taylor designed a large number of works in Norfolk, and the alterations to this house were among the more ambitious of his renovation projects, leaving little indication of the original appearance. Distinctive in this example are his use of semi-elliptical arches, and the absence of a Palladian window, a feature he commonly included in renovations.Seth H. Moseley (born October 16, 1881 in New Haven) who also owned the Collingwood Hotel in New York, NY (known as Hotel Metro today and located at 43-49 West 35th Street) was the owner of the property until his death on Dec 7, 1938. Up until 1939, the property was used as a farm and known as Blackberry River Farm. After the death of Mr. Moseley, Dorothea and James Schwarzhaupt bought the property and transformed it into an inn. After 1970On July 19, 1971 the owners Dorothea and James Schwarzhaupt sold the inn to a local corporation which modernized the property and among other changes added the swimming pool.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The listed property included 9acre in Norfolk and 1acre in North Canaan. The current owners acquired the property on June 21, 1993. Today Blackberry River Inn is operated as a bed and breakfast.

We happened upon this inn while planning our upstate CT roadtrip. Price was average and it was easy to make a reservation online. We were amazed by how beautiful the place was upon arriving for check-in. It is truly a traditionally designed and furnished establishment. Our room was clean and warm it was a cold night, with a large bathroom and complimentary bottled water. Breakfast blew us away -- from the truly gorgeous light-filled room, to the incredible service and simply delightful food. We wanted to stay longer, but it was truly perfect for even just one night.
Lucas and his colleague I've forgotten his name were so friendly and helpful. The two mornings we stayed there we were served a delicious breakfast. It was very quiet though the birds were quite welcoming and vociferous in the morning unusual for a city girl to hear upon waking. It felt historic and yet very clean and well taken care of. I wish restaurants in the town had not lost so many workers which forced them to close or have very erratic hours.
This gem is tucked away in the northwest corner of Connecticut. We are here to drop our son off at school. It is situated close to most of the schools here. The buildings and rooms are very clean and well maintained. The staff are wonderful and very helpful. They are also bi-lingual. The breakfast is very good.Rooms: 5/5
One of the best hotel experiences of my life. To say Lucas went above and beyond would be an understatement. Stunning house, wonderful amenities, breathtaking surroundings. A must stay!
This place is cozy, calm and beautiful. !You can find one of the most delicious waffles you have ever eaten! They have a great attention and the staff is really kind.Rooms: 5/5
I completely recommend it, it's a quiet environment. A beautiful place to enjoy a nice tea and different preparations all wonderful. Delia, Lucas and Joe's attention is excellent. We are coming back with no doubt.
We stayed here a few months ago and it was great. The staff were really wonderful and kind. They asked if we had any allergies, so I shared that I have Celiac. They had plenty of breakfast options for me, but decided to surprise me by making gluten free pancakes one morning, even though they aren’t on the menu. It was really thoughtful and such a nice gesture.
My husband and I stayed at the Blackberry Inn for 2 nights. What a gem! It is a beautiful historic property with tons of charm. The rooms were clean and well kept. The breakfast was freshly made and delicious - good coffee, fresh fruit, yummy omelettes and waffles!!! Lukas was a delight. He took great care of the guests and offered us some great suggestions on places to visit in the area. The Campbell Falls, only a few minutes away, were lovely! On the morning of our departure, I accidentally dropped my bag- sending all my belongings flying everywhere. My husband and I searched for a half hour for 2 pieces of jewelry that were missing. Unfortunately, we had to leave without locating them. As we were checking out, Lukas was so compassionate. He promised they would be certain to look for the items and would give me a call right away if they turned up. Thankfully, we ended up finding the jewelry scattered in our belongings. When I gave Lukas a call to let him know we found the lost items, he was so gracious and happy to hear. True and genuine caring and kindness!!! It was a wonderful stay and we can't wait to go back. Highly recommend!!!
Loved it. Friendly service. Road noise was a bit loud, but everything else was lovely.Rooms: 5/5
This is a hidden jem. We stayed in the cottage and it was beautiful. The large windows with the seat that ran the entire wall was great for sitting and watching the sunset. The fireplace was amazing and the was enough wood for the entire night. It was set up sa all you had to do was open the flute and light the paper. The bed was huge and so comfortable. The bathroom fas just another plus. The shower was.great, but the spa tub was so relaxing. The staff was great. I just can't say enough. Definitely a must stay. You definitely have to go down for breakfast as well. I did and brought breakfast back to my wife. It was local, fresh, and absolutely delicious.
