At Behind the Smile Dentistry for Children, everything we do revolves around our patients. Dr. Eric Downey, Dr. Carolyn Muckerheide, Dr. Ashley Schaaf, and our team emphasize comfort, reassurance, and gentleness in all we do. While we offer modern, proven pediatric dental care, it is always delivered with compassion and without pain. Our office environment is warm and friendly, immediately putting even the most timid patient at ease. We stress preventive dental practices, teaching children at an early age the importance of keeping their teeth and gums healthy and strong. No child’s dental needs are the same as those of any other child. Therefore, we develop custom treatment plans for each young patient, involving parent and patient in the decision-making process, ensuring that we create a plan that is effective and timely.

My 5 yo daughter needed to have two baby teeth extracted and we had a wonderful experience. Dr. Downey and the anesthesiologist they use, kept us informed and explained everything that was going to happen. It definitely made this nervous mom feel better about what was happening. We even came home to a little balloon and stuffed animal that had been delivered by them. We also got phone calls from the office and anesthesiologist just to make sure she was doing okay after the surgery.  They really go above and beyond to make the kids and parents feel comfortable and less anxious. We will definitely be sticking with them!

We were referred to Dr Downey by our family/adult dentist after a late night accident/emergency with our toddler.  The emergency contact at the office responded quickly and was very friendly in finding a time to see us.  

The office visit went great.  They explained everything really well and were very helpful.  I couldn't be more pleased with the experience.

This is truly the best Pediatric Dentist we've been too and we've been to dentists in CA and AZ. Dr. Downey is friendly, open and super informative. His staff is AMAZING!!! They love children and take time to get to know them as individuals, they even take special classes/courses regarding kiddos with ASD to find ways to make their dental experience better and less stressful. The staff go above and beyond to make sure you're informed and not just on dental issues. Its an amazing place to take your kids. And to those who didn't have a good experience, (Mr. One Star); rudeness and being mean spirited wouldn't be tolerated at any business, much less one centered around kids. Go there and see for yourself, they are professional, informed and the environment is happy and peaceful, and this is a dentists office. Good job guys!!!

I have loved our experience here. Dr. Downey is great. The hygienists and assistants are so friendly. They made my nervous daughter feel at ease, and they all did really good work too. We are so happy to have been referred here and will certainly refer our friends as well.

When my son was only 2.5 he tripped and fell on a hardwood floor, face-first. Blood was everywhere, and a front tooth was at a 90-degree angle from its normal position...poor little guy...it was awful :(.

I took him to Behind the Smile because some co-workers had recommended them, and I'm so glad I did!! They got him in right away, and Dr. Ashley was absolutely fantastic in both her compassion and level of knowledge. 

Through the appointment, my son never even had to leave my lap. She actually had a giant teddy bear he could lean back on, while I held him, so she could examine him. She graded the looseness of each front tooth on a 1-5 scale  (I hadn't realized both were actually loose), confirmed the blood supply looked good, and gave specific soft-food diet direction and follow-up instructions. I honestly believe she saved his front teeth.

We've been with Dr. Ashley ever since. She's just fantastic.

I should also mention the front office staff is great, and they have an AWESOME wall with cubbies of of small toys the children can choose from after their appointment. Light-up bouncy balls, cool things like that. Best dentist ever!!
