My boyfriend and I came here on friday around 9:30 there were about 8 people in front of us and we were finally sat at around 10:20. The host checked our IDs which we found strange, neither of us look underage and even if we were we wouldn’t wait an hour to get a seat. Anyways, we get led to the complete back, behind a curtain. The drinks were good but a bit on the sweeter side. Their selection wasn’t amazing and their bar was lacking. The service was not great for a speakeasy. It gave the vibe of an upscale bar rather than a speakeasy. As well as there was a one bartender! Overall, there’s a nice vibe but nothing impressive and lacklustre service but good drinks at least and nice decor!
Nice ambiance, and neat location, hidden behind an unassuming door. Drinks and drink selection were fine, but I did get the feeling that the waitress wanted us to order more, and more frequently. I felt this way more so after a larger party came in and we didn’t see our waitress for a long stretch of time, and when asked for another round + water, as well as the bill later, we were kept waiting for a while. But I suppose it does make sense to switch one’s attention to the larger party with more orders from a financial standpoint. Still a good experience overall.
Incredible drinks and a super intimate space, Big in Japan is a great spot for cocktails. We loved the speakeasy style and also that it wasn’t particularly hard to find. Well priced, great service and chilled. Music was low enough to have a conversation but loud enough for atmosphere. We’ll be back on our next trip!
A fantastic, cozy atmosphere with a pleasant soundtrack playing in the background which was just at the right volume. The full length of the bar table which spans throughout the entire bar is decorated with candles, which really adds an extra dimension to the already palpable, vintage, speakeasy ambiance. I showed up just as the bar opened up and was the first customer in. The waitress/hostess was very friendly and helpful, and recommended some of the more popular cocktails on the menu. In regards to the entrance to the bar, please note that it has two different black doors, and one of them is permanently shut. So if you keep knocking, and no one is answering and it won't budge if you're trying to open it, it's the wrong door. I heard some people knocking on the locked door and went out to help them find their way in. The entrance might be hard to find if you don't know what you're looking for, but that's the purpose of the speakeasy. Overall the service was quick and efficient. Ordering of the drinks and paying my tab was very fast, and I haven't encountered the slowness in service that the other reviewers have mentioned. I've had the following cocktails: • Carrot me away: Amaretto, whiskey, pistachio, carrot juice. • Fleur de surreau: St-Germain, gin, sparkling wine, orange, raspberry, lemon. • Easy James: Jameson, St-Germain, lemon, apricot, chamomile. 'Easy James' was decent, 'Fleur de surreau' was great and 'Carrot me away' was exceptional. Will definitely come back to try the rest of their cocktail menu. On the minor annoyance side, the bar uses thin, paper napkins instead of coasters, which stick to the bottom of your glass every time you want to take a sip, and that takes away from the smoothness of the experience. Another thing that I found unfortunate, is that in this day and age, a business doesn't offer tap payments to the customers. I haven't had to use a physical card at a bar or a restaurant in the last two years I decided to grab a physical card with me last minute before leaving home, just in case. So, make sure you bring a physical credit card or cash before you head down this mystery lane. For payments, you have an option to either open a tab or to pay for each drink separately right away. A great place thanks to the atmosphere, service and the cocktails, but, just a few small points away from being perfect.
Super place. Great vibe and ambiance. Amazing cocktails!! Sevice : OK. Only downside : the waitress seemed in a hurry to pick up my half-finished drink. *Also note : you must give them a credit card to hold on to, or pay each time you order.
From the outside it’s just a black door- on the inside a jazzy and soft candle-lit speakeasy. On a Wednesday night it isn’t too crowded, just enough to feel cozy as the night passes. Feels timeless, warm but chic. Drinks are of great quality. The bartender is excellent at making drinks from description/preference. Will be returning soon.
Hidden bar on busy street. There’re lots of bar for young people around the street, but here’s good for middle-age like me. Cocktails were pretty good and I liked that the menu price included taxes. Music and atmosphere is good. I reduce one star because we had to wait so long even there’re no people in the bar. I don’t know why but we waited 30min to get into an empty bar
Beautiful speakeasy, very nice selection of spirits you can pick which brand you want to be used in the making of your cocktails . And as in Japan, if you are a regular guest, you can have your bottles labeled and kept for you by the bar.
Great cocktails all a bit too sweet for my taste, but can ask to tone it down on the sweetness. The service is great and the venue is absolutely beautiful. Highly recommend!
One word. AMAZING! We showed up on a friday night, no reservation, party of eight. We were taken to a PRIVATE ROOM, to enjoy a seated experience for most of us. After a great chat with the bartender, we decided to leave as my friend Brandon was overwhelmed by the public pool like smell emanating from the air ducts. The decors, the ambiance, I was shaken to my core. Would 100% recommend for large groups for a great meal. Sincerely, Archibald Meatpants, MD
