We stopped into Bacan, a Venezuelan restaurant that specializes in arepas and empanadas. - Papelon $2.50 - not too sweet. Similar to an iced tea. - Venezuelan chicken empanada $4.00 - my favourite thing that we ordered. Chicken was tender and moist. The dough reminded me of something my grandma used to make. The side of wasacaca was tasty. - Pabellon arepa $10.00 - beware; all the meat is stuffed into the first half of the arepa. The beef was succulent but very greasy. - Llanera arepa $10.50 - liked the addition of avocado. Sirloin was nice, cheese oozy. Decent Venezuelan street eats. 3.5 stars.
Visited this place for Summerlicious dinner first dining experience at this establishment. Overall the experience was positive and would likely return to try some items on the menu but there are areas of improvement for a 5-star review. Service was on the slow side for Wed evening. Our reservation was for 6:30pm and out of 5 other tables only three were occupied. We had decided prior to arriving so we ordered right away We didn’t get our drinks until 7pm and then at 7:15pm we got EVERYTHING at once. Appetizer, main side note, they brought a wrong dish for me but no biggie and dessert at once. We had to quickly eat freshly made empanadas so that our main wouldn’t get cold. While everything tasted great short ribs on the tough side, we couldn’t fully take our time to enjoy each bite. There were so many flies and bees/wasps? around us it was so bad that the table next to us asked to be moved from our section. Since dessert came out at the same time the mini donuts weren’t fresh by the time we got to them. They were super hard and not enjoyable. The cookie was delicious. A small suggestion to the owner- don’t bring everything out at once unless asked to do so because it takes away from having a three course meal and patrons feel rushed.
We went in the last day of summerlicious. And decided to be inside as we have two kids. Air conditioning was not working well. Washrooms are clean. We are vegetarian so we ordered the vegetarian arepa and one mushrooms and cheese and one spinach and bechamel empanadas. Also one of each deserts and two papelon. It took long time for the waitress to take our order and then to be ready another while. However she was kind and asked us if everything was going well couple of times. Papelon was disappointing. Small portion and wired after taste. Not sweet or lemony. It supposed to be melted panela pure cane sugar with lemon. Usually makes me smile this drink because it reminds me Venezuela. But not this time. Arepa is in the small side and only with a small tajada fried sweet plantain on top beans were seasoned with sugar as expected and cheese was ok. The dipping sauce taste just like in Venezuela . Yuca fries were the best. And the open Argentinian empanadas were delicious. Also in the small side though. Deserts not that good. The fried donut are tasteless and dense even with the dulce de leche sauce. And the alfajor was ok. I had high expectations, since I don’t get to eat often Venezuelan food and I miss it quite a lot. And I was a bit disappointed. Overall was ok.
This restaurant has got to be one of the best in the city. Good service and very good food. Had the La Vaca Real which was heaven. The beef was cooked to perfection and left me wanting more. Overall an amazing experience. And the Colombian waiter was extremely friendly. Would 100% recommend.
I went to have brunch with some friends. They take reservations. I would say they were a bit slow with the orders and none of them arrived together. That is something to improve. I am from Venezuela, so I have high standards for Venezuelan food, however the cachapa was good and arepas too. The shredded beef is incredible. The tequeños are delicious, they are not the traditional ones, still delish! The garlic sauce is very tasty.
Food Quality: Price/Value: Atmosphere: Service: All I can say is WOW was this place a surprise. Came here for the first time and was delighted by the overall atmosphere/ambiance with the Latin music played throughout the restaurant really setting the mood. The staff were great as they immediately greeted and seated us while giving us some time to order. 2 glasses with a jug of water was quickly served and after spending 5-10 minutes trying to figure out what to get due to what felt like an overwhelming amount of options, our kind waitress suggested we try the "Arepa Combo For Two" for $36 to which we agreed to try with the following selections: 1. Empanadas: 1 Beef & 1 Chicken. 2. Arepas: 2 Pabellon. 3. Sauces: Chipotle & Wasacaca. The food was prepared very quickly, almost within 10-15 mins and when brought to our table, was extremely tantalizing. The yuca fries were some of the best if not the best fries I've ever tasted while the empanada and arepa were delicious! Almost ended up going to heaven half way through the meal haha. Our waitress kindly checked on us a few times to fill our jug and to make sure the food was to our liking. Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend trying this restaurant out and specifically the "Arepa Combo For Two" as I feel it is worth the money for the amount of food you get. Will definitely be back to try more items from their menu!
I’m not an expert on Latino food but the yuca fries tasted as close to what I had in Peru. The arepa had more avocado than chicken so it tasted extremely bland. The empanada was amazing though and I’d happily order it again — steak.
My girlfriend and I came here to celebrate her birthday and we could not have asked for more. We had the arepa combo with empenadas and yuca fries see picture and it was delicious. The arepas were so good that we each ordered an additional arepa afterwards. The staff were very kind and attentive. They even played happy birthday over the speakers and brought us a flan with dulche de leche on top. Highly recommend this spot and I will be back to try the rest of the menu.
Really tasty food here, the service is great, and the Venezuelan lemonade is delicious!
Stumbled upon Bar Bacan while looking for something offering gluten free delivery and what a find! We ordered a few empanadas, some arepas and the yuca fries. Everything was fantastic and traveled very well. We will definitely be ordering again, looking forward to trying more of the arepas as the three flavours we had were all great. The chimichurri was also perfect with the empanadas.
