Alexandra Marine & General Hospital

About

Alexandra Marine and General Hospital (AMGH) provides healthcare services in Huron County and several surrounding municipalities.

Story

The Hospital is an active treatment facility operated under the direction of a twelve member Board of Directors. AMGH currently operates forty-two (42) beds providing acute, long-term, psychiatric, emergency and ambulatory care and is operating under a four year accreditation award granted in 2013.

AMGH is a full service community hospital providing on-call coverage for internal medicine, general surgery, diagnostic imaging, anaesthesia, and obstetrics. In addition, the Emergency Department has a physician on duty twenty-four hours a day, seven days per week. AMGH is the largest provider of hospital services in Huron County which includes the delivery of primary care, a range of secondary level acute and complex continuing care to its broad catchment population. It is a Schedule 1 facility with a twenty bed inpatient psychiatric unit that provides care for all of Huron County as well as providing services for some bordering communities in Bruce, Grey and Perth Counties. The Hospital also offers full-time community psychiatric outpatient/day care facilities for the Towns of Goderich, Clinton, Exeter, Seaforth and Wingham. In addition to these community programs, the Hospital is the sponsor for the Regional Intensive Case Management program serving mentally ill patients throughout Huron and Perth Counties.

Medical practitioners on active staff include two general surgeons, four psychiatrists, one internist, one OB/GYN and fourteen family physicians. Three general practitioner anaesthetists provide anaesthesia coverage. These physicians, supported by visiting specialists primarily from London and Stratford, provide services for a wide range of outpatient clinics including general surgery, gynaecology, internal medicine/cardiology, neurology, obstetrics and plastics. Four general practitioner obstetricians provide obstetrical service.

Other community services provided at AMGH include cardiology investigations, a wide range of diagnostic imaging procedures, laboratory, diabetic education, nutrition, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech and language pathology, pulmonary function testing, holter monitoring, stress testing, ECG, and social work. An active ambulatory care program is maintained and includes day surgery and outpatient paediatrics. Those patients in need of more specialized care and treatment are primarily referred to the tertiary care facilities in London.
While each program is unique in its own area, together they form a hospital team decidated to compassionate, high quality and family centred care.

AMGH is a fully accredited hospital with Accreditation Canada, the leader in raising the bar for quality in health. Their Mission is to drive quality in health services through accreditation. They help organizations across Canada and internationally examine and improve the quality of service they provide to their patients and clients. AMGH strives to continually improve by participating in the Accreditation process and by meeting or exceeding the identified standards and criteria, receive Accreditation Canada's highest award. AMGH is scheduled for their next accreditation survey in the fall of 2017.

My husband and I both had to go to the Emergency department this morning. They have a sign on the wall that estimates what the wait time is at that time of day. We got in a little under the time. Every single member of the hospital and medical teams were pleasant, helpful and professional. We were very pleased with the attention and service. Highly recommend!!
Well was just at the hospital for the first time, such friendly staff, great doctor wish I remembered his name didn’t matter had a great experience! Such kind nurses! Keep up the great work!
My wife has a tumor that went undetect on the first 4 visits. On the 5th time by ambulance a c-scan showed a mass near her pancreas. Sent to London cancer hospital and had a biopsy. Even a rush for results takes two weeks. After to many times to emergency in Goderich finally addimited. Pain was managed and she felt better. Two days later she was sent home and pain relief by pills was not working. Back in emergency on Saturday morning and on iv and pain being managed. Hopefully she will be readmitted and stay until biopsy results are in. Dr Leslie's team says kemo will shrink the mass but the waiting and mismanagement at Goderich has only worsend the condition.
I had a contrast CT scan done here today and the team were phenomenal! From check in to the scan everyone I met were so kind and friendly and the hospital is extremely clean. Jaclyn apologies if I spelt that wrong was so lovely and took excellent care of me. She's very easy to chat with and I felt completely safe under her care. This was my first time getting an IV, she made it quick and pain free. She went above and beyond to check in with the radiologist to confirm the best plan of action in accordance with my symptoms. She was very attentive and made the whole procedure a breeze. Thank you!!
I usually would have good things to say about this hospital however, last week the level of care that was shown fell short.nI am very aware of the state of our healthcare system in Ontario. Especially in our specific county of Huron is very short staffed and over worked.nI am a patient person willing to wait knowing these things, however being shown some form of priority or care towards myself would be the bare minimum I would ask.nI went in around 1pm- the board said 3-4 emergency department average wait time. I was the third person in the waiting room no issue. However when 6.5-7 hours pass.. of me watching 14 people 11 of them came after me come and go without them bothering to acknowledge me- I had to go up ask multiple times if I could get pain pills, ice packs etc. my injury at the time of entry yes non urgent so me waiting that expected 3-4 hours as I said no issue..nme waiting 7 hours, with noticeable signs of lost circulation in my limb from my infection is my problem.nI heard most of patients after me were just as non urgent i saw 4 of them discharged with bad colds or flu bugs.. when I went to the nurse to tell her I am leaving asking where the doctor was I told her I was dizzy starving as I have now sat for 7hours.. with no food I showed her my limb, I explained how more then 11 people after me are left but you haven’t brought me back yet. You could clearly see my limb losing circulation she told me I could go get a sandwich and they’ll try get to me when they can to be patient please as there busy.nI said my peace and just told her I’m leaving that I can’t wait any longer I will come back when your not busy- all she replied with ok sounds good.nnNothing rude was said by any of the staff however their lack of patient care is what I found was lacking. As I mentioned I never rude or complained to them until my pain was to the point I needed help but offering no apology for the wait, finding nothing concerning about the appearance of my limb or my symptoms after 7 hours is what I found my problem with. I understand how it’s prioritized by urgency of the injury however when I hear/see multiple people after and before me with stomach flu come in and out without me ever getting to a room isn’t prioritizing patients.nnI went to seaforth where there care was nothing short of amazing the way they managed multiple patients at once while trying get people out of the waiting room is how goderich needed to manage the ER department. I ended up with blood infection which why my limb wasn’t circulating blood properly.nLike I said I am understanding of how the system is but I think the managing of this particular hospitals emergency department is ran needs a drastic improvement. I know healthcare workers are overworked and this hospital is no stranger to that however the way the hospital is managed has a great impact not only on your healthcare workers there patients as well.
