The 49th is a Vancouver Island owned and operated family business with stores in Ladysmith (where it all started), Chemainus, Cedar and Duncan, BC.

Story

The 49th got it's start in 1977 when the Richmond's purchased the small corner store on 1st Avenue of Ladysmith, BC. We have grown with our community and now with 4 locations, we employ over 220 local people. Our goal is to provide top quality products, unparalleled service and a friendly shopping atmosphere. Typical grocery store with fair pricesnnWe found everything under the sun therennI will say however we didn’t find very much organic or healthy options as we had hoped.nnWith that said if you’re used to an average store with lots of goodies this place is for you.
The parking lot is a bit chaotic, and the store layout could be better. Also, the customer service could have been better. The cashier was really nice to the guy in front of me, then lukewarm towards me right after.

Sandwich quality has taken a major dive since handover from the 49th but that’s not the worst. This was the last location to do dry cleaning in Ladysmith and they stopped doing it.
Please train your weekend staff at the coffee shop better. We come in during the week often for a mocha and a iced london fog and our drinks are always on point and service is fast. So i keep asking my husband to come back. Well today after church it was younger staff and they totally missed the mark. My husband ordered a mocha and he was given an iced mocha i assume a mix up because I asked for my london fog iced he hates cold mochas and it was over full and not stirred. I was happy to see my iced london fog but upon taking my first sip I was gravely dissapointed in my drink as well. My drink was bland and not the creamy sweetness I recieve during the week. I am unsure what they did to make it taste so watery and bland and not sweet and creamy but $12 wasted sadlynWe will watch for who is working before we order next. Please train your younger weekend staff. I wanted to go back in a return both drinks immediately but my husband is not one to make a fuss.
