This was my first ice fishing trip at Zippel Bay. Didn't use any of their fish houses. We did our own thing and just stayed in one of the small cabins which is what we wanted. It was perfect for us. Couch and bunk bed available. Shower was super warm and was nice at the end of a cold day of fishing. Plenty of outlets to charge phones, fish finders, drill batteries, etc. The service was incredible. Front desk was available most of the day and answered any of our questions. Having minnows on-site was clutch and made things super convenient. You could tell the guys working the roads and fish houses got things done. The food at the bar/restaurant was really good. You definitely don't leave hungry. Good selection of beer and the bartender took good care of us. Overall it was a positive experience.
We had a group of 7. Midweek cabin stay with shallow and deep ice houses. We did not do the meal plan as we had a ton of food. We did eat supper each night at the restaurant. First...our cabin was great! Roomy, warm and well stocked. The fish huts were warm, plenty of room and the old office chairs were pretty comfortable. Day 2 we were not having luck and they moved us to another hour. Fish on!!! The restaurant was great. The waitress we had was phenomenal! She memorized our drink order day 1 and had a great personality. Will definitely be a new yearly trip for us. We all had a great time. stocked.
We came for the weekend with 4 people. Disappointing to not catch many fish with that much money spent. Weather and location probably played a big part. Friday was ok fishing, Saturday was dead, and Sunday at -22 degrees we threw in the towel. Overall we brought in a total of 15 fish, kept 7. Mostly all were very small except for the 25” pike I caught. Hard to plan for weather when you have to book weeks-a month in advance. The deepest water we were able to access was between 25-29’ deep. They were willing to let us switch houses which was as accommodating as they could be. Still no fish. Talking with others staying at other resorts, they go out to at least 40’ deep. Friday we had 1 guy check on us and plow the road while we were there. Otherwise it’s very self-serv. We stayed in the mobile home and I was impressed with the condition, it wasn’t anything fancy, but was clean. The restaurant was slow service, they had a couple servers not show up for work. They were out of chicken all weekend and out of walleye Saturday. Will be back to LOTW but will try a different resort next time.
Excellent fishing. Cabins were awesome. Bring your own food. Cheaper. They only offer one meal - no choice.Rooms: 5/5
The cabins are spacious and function well, but the age is starting to show with the carpets, faucets, etc. The heated floor in the bathroom was a nice feature. The breakfast included in our package was decent, but it is family style and you do not get a choice of food. They bring it out and you get what you get. Glad we didn't have a picky eater with us. The service was good, but very slow. The line to purchase items or get your ice house assignment took about 30 min and there were only 2 people in front of us. The nice piece is you can get all your minnows and basic fishing essentials on site. The cost is one of the reasons for the 3 stars. We had a party of four with a 2 night stay and 2 days of fishing. The total was a bit over $1600.00, so around $415.00 each. This may be the going rate everywhere at LOW, but it seemed steep. The fishing was very very slow and we didn't catch a single keeper. Zippel cannot control the fishing, but moving houses was not an option, so we were limited to the assigned house. My personal preference would be to use a service that moves us around if the fishing is so slow. The roads on the ice were incredibly taken care of, so driving was not an issue. They do an amazing job keeping the ice cleared of snow.
We had a blast on the ice, great fishing. Ice houses are cramped. Service was good.Rooms: 3/5
I thought the service was excellent. Only had a few complaints like we got the meal plan and had to eat what they gave you each meal should be a list of options to choose from Incase certain items of food you do not like . Also if you don’t take the meal plan you will not be able to eat breakfast or have lunch .. so better eat a healthy dinner if off the meal plan cause your SOL otherwise . The bug guts all over the walls and unclean air conditioner filters were a bit nasty luckily I had the same air conditioner at home so I knew how to clean them and reset it . The fishing with a guide was great we had Cole newer captain and a great one imo he did everything for us which was amazing from baiting hooks to restring hooks taking fish off he did it all glad to have meet him . Think he’s got a bright future !! If I end up there again I’ll definitely ask for him !! The cook was a master of cooking the food I ate was some of the best I’ve hade soo good I actually wish I could have it now lol !! The waitress was great so busy only complaint I’d say would be didn’t ask if I need more to drink but when you only have one waitress running the show maybe I should’ve asked for more she was so nice !!! Staff definitely got a A+ … oh another complaint I have is that the third day we took a boat out on our own and had no idea where to go to fish . Wish they would’ve gave us a gps and some locations to go fish . We had a depth finder on the boat not sure if it was also a fish finder never used one so no clue … the tv was a bit out dated still had a vcr combo think they go to Walmart get a 25 inch flat screen already the prices are cheap now on them . But over all experience I’ll definitely be back !!! Can’t wait to go again !!!! Hopefully knowing what I know now will make the trip that much better !!!
Worth the drive. Put us on the fish. Plenty of action and plenty to keep for dinner and also the freezer.Rooms: 5/5
Worst fish house I have ever stayed in! Terrible experience as far as the fish house goes! The door barely closed, the door to the outside bathroom did not close at all so if you needed to use it you were greeted with -40 windchill right in the face. Sleepers are old and very outdated. Our sleeper shack had a busted double pane window. Luckily it was only the inside pane that was cracked and not the outside. No batteries provided for lights so you sit in the dark from 5pm after? For paying $1000 for a weekend it was an absolute joke. Unreal they can’t afford to put a battery in each fish house for lights after paying $1000. We were told if we wanted power to hook up our truck and let it run, we’ve never experienced this through any other resort. We will never stay at this resort again. Do yourself a favor and go to Adrians.
Staff is very friendly. Did a good job to help you get fish.Rooms: 5/5
