Wilensky's Light Lunch Inc

Story

Wilensky's Light Lunch, styled in its signage as simply Wilensky to conform to Bill 101, is a lunch counter located at 34 Fairmount Avenue West in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Opened in 1932 by Moe Wilensky, the restaurant was immortalized in Mordecai Richler's novel, The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz. Scenes in the film version of the book were shot in the restaurant.ProductsWilensky's is most famous for its Special: a grilled beef salami and beef bologna sandwich with mustard on a kaiser roll, pressed flat from the grill — mustard is compulsory, as a sign in the restaurant announces. Though recognized as part of Montreal's Jewish community the restaurant, like most Canadian Jews, does not keep kosher. Their soft drinks are still mixed by hand.HistoryThe restaurant was originally located at the corner of St. Urbain Street and Fairmount Avenue in Montreal's Mile End district. It moved to its current location in 1952 and was run by the founder's widow Ruth Wilensky (until 2012), his son Asher, daughter Sharon and granddaughter Alisa.Wilensky's SpecialThe famous Wilensky's special sandwich is a grilled bologna sandwich. It was included in Travel + Leisure magazine's May 2012 edition's article about the 'Best Sandwiches From Around the World', written by Jonathan Gold. It was also featured in the second episode of The Mind of a Chef PBS series with Anthony Bourdain and David Chang.

Jewish cuisine with rich history. Owners are friendly, sandwich tastes great and the ambience is rustic and homely. You can see how it has evolved over the years with photos of the family restaurant laid neatly across the walls. Go for a Wilensky special with Swiss cheese and pickles if you like.
Been going for over 30 years but it's a stop all tourists and locals who haven't gone must do. Simple fair, small deli with an old fashion soda fountain and over 90 yrs of history. Nothing as really changed. You're basically eating in a wonderful time capsule.
This place has both history and ambiance. The fried salami and cheese sandwich was decent and the pickles nice and crisp. The cola is made to order with syrup and soda water and is pleasant and not overly sweet like canned cola. I’ll definitely go back again.
Lovely old school vibe, extremely kind and friendly folks behind the counter friendliness level is high comparing to other food & beverage spots in Montreal. I think less than 10 seats at the bar, expect a wait if you want to dine in or there are plenty of spots outdoor/by the park too. The sandwich is ready, comes warm within in 10 secons of me ordering, amazing! The sandwich itself is tasty, small and light but to be honest not mindblowing. Ill probably be back for quick snack and for the service & nostalgia of it. Sandwich cost CA$4.50, side of pickle 80cents and a glass of cola $1 something. Whole meal cost less than $10. And you can easily eat 2 sandwich if hungry. Another important note- they accept cash or Canadian debit card only they do not accept US or international debit/credit cards. Please come prepared with some cash.
Amazing spot. A MUST when in Montreal and in need of a quick, delicious snack. A truly awesome landmark and piece of local history. Be sure to check out all the cool clippings on the walls!
An absolute classic. Undeniably simple and perfectly uncomplicated. Sodas made fresh, the old fashioned way. Sandos are ready and served before you can even sit down.
The famous wilensky looks like it was trapped in a time capsule. Its a family owned place since 1932 with there famous sandwiches that every one seems to flock to. The base price starts at 4.39 per sandwich. I find it a little mediocre you’re not paying for the quality of the food only for the nostalgia.
The best bologna sandwich in Montreal hands down! The staff is always kind and welcoming. Affordable and won't break the bank to get an authentic experience of the past. Make sure to go at odd times as there can be line during the rush hours. My go to order is the Wilensky special with swiss cheese and a sour pickle on the side and a old fashion cherry soda.
This is MUST to visit, great food and amazing service. Just don't forget to bring your debit card or cash. Sandwiches and milk shakes are top notch, very affordable as well.Food: 5/5
In today's rapidly changing world Wilensky's is a wonderfully iconic 1934 Montreal dining experience. There's nothing that hasn't already been said about the Wilensky's Special. Its simply delicious and a must for Montrealers and visitors alike.
