Wild River State Park

Story

Wild River State Park is a state park of Minnesota, United States, curving along 18mi of the St. Croix River. This long, narrow park is shaped somewhat like a sideways 'S', with development largely concentrated in the lower third. The remote upper sections flank the mouth of a tributary called the Sunrise River. The park is managed to provide quieter, more nature-oriented recreation as a counterpoint to the busier William O'Brien and Interstate State Parks downstream.Wild River State Park is named after the St. Croix's designation as a National Wild and Scenic River. The park contains the Point Douglas to Superior Military Road: Deer Creek Section, a surviving section of the Point Douglas to Superior Military Road built in 1853, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.Natural historyGeologyThe bedrock of the park is basalt formed by volcanic activity 1.1 billion years ago. This is overlain by a thick layer of glacial debris. During the Wisconsin glaciation 16,000 years ago, a small glacial lobe branched northeast off the Des Moines Lobe, blocking drainage from farther north. Water backed up into Glacial Lake Grantsburg. The soil in the park is quite sandy from the sediments that accumulated in this now-vanished lake. At the end of this ice age 10,000 years ago, meltwater flowing out of Glacial Lake Duluth carved the St. Croix River Valley. Today the river is one hundred times smaller than its glacial maximum. The ancient bank of the river is a bluff running through the park, well back from the current riverbed.

I camped at Wild River State Park with my girlfriend over the weekend and we had a great time. It's a fairly secluded park with miles of hiking trails through the woods and along the St. Croix river. Camp sites were decently spread out (so it didn't feel like you were camping on top of others), and I could tell there would be a decent amount of privacy if it weren't for the lack of foliage. In addition, the staff is extremely friendly and helpful, which is always a bonus. I hope to make a return trip in the near future! Note: around Halloween, it looks like families will decorate their sites and host trick-or-treating. This is entirely optional, but looked like a lot of fun.

We took our daughter here for her first camping trip, and incidentally my first time to this park. Campground is nice and wooded so it gets dark early in the evening, and camp sites are not too close to be on top of others. Very popular with families, and the trail network is fairly widespread making it good for a couple days stay. No real swimming options as the river is fast with drop offs here making it a bit better for paddling adventures.

This is, to date, our favorite park and we'll definitely return. The staff checking us in Friday was very friendly, outgoing and knowledgeable. Park rangers have been very personable and engaging with guests. The park is quiet and the camping sites offer quite a bit of space between each site. 35 miles of hiking trails and we were only able to cover 10! They offer cabins, primitive sites and RV sites with electricity.

I really enjoyed our family visit here! Very clean and wonderfully friendly hosts. Attendants were helpful and polite. Camp ground was meticulously clean and amenities very nice. Be aware, you cannot bring your own wood for burning. Wood on site is 6$ a bundle. Bundles are small. It'd be nice and easier to deter people from illegal burning if the bundles were bigger. Also maybe hardwood? All they had in the selection was birch which burned very quickly. I spent around 30$ for wood and only had brief fires. Otherwise it was a great and family friendly place. Also very dog friendly.

Great place to hike. Most of the trails are paved. There are some great dirt paths by the river. You occasionally have to leap over holes the river took from the trail. Definitely recommend.
