My experience at this contemporary art centre was underwhelming. I visited last week and I wasn't told the gallery 1-4 were closed until after I purchased my ticket. I like contemporary arts and I enjoy coming up with my own interpretations when looking at a piece. Some of the installations were pretty intriguing to look at, but some of them were just plain meaningless/hollow. The David Hockney exhibition was cool and all of his works at this exhibition came from the Walker's holdings. Not bad for $15, but the free sculpture garden outside was much more enjoyable.
I wish the Walker had more art and artists to look and ponder at. Unfortunately every time I go, I'm disappointed by the lack of inspiration and displays. The staff are incredibly friendly, but there were more staff than visitors at this museum. The bathroom I visited was not the cleanest and the sitting areas seemed dusty. The only thing my husband and I enjoyed was their cafe. It was very cozy with lots of natural light streaming through the floor to ceiling windows. The food smelled good, which we didn't have, but the beverages we had were great.
There is art here. Colours. Shapes. Words. Sounds. The employees/Volunteers are polite and helpful. The restaurant is weird. You can smell grease throughout the main hallway. Makes me want to not be there after an hour. I would have liked to see more installations instead of a steady stream of iPhone movie after iPhone movie. Props to the film makers but the gallery put too many on display.
We visited the Walker to view their David Hockney exhibit and it was amazing! Hockney works in multiple mediums including lithograph prints, painting, fax machines in the 1980s and iPads most recently. We don’t go here to see video installations, and there is a lot of them about! I find them to be self-indulgent, boring, preachy, and unappealing. The sculpture garden is worth-while, art-wise! Dying this cold spring, it’s actually a plus that the trees haven’t bloomed yet, cuz you can see the artwork unobstructed by foliage. :-
stellar curatorial team here. internationally renowned. minneapolis is truly lucky to have the walker as an option to view and immerse yourself in the arts. as members we try to visit at least a couple times a quarter. exhibits cycle out at a speed that gives you the opportunity to return and see things again, but not for too long where a return visit isn’t warranted.
A nice collection, and galleries that rotate regularly. A must for modern and alternative art enthusiasts. The sculpture garden is also a must-see!
An inspiring place to be. Indoor and outdoor interests. Sculptures and landscapes. Well connected and walkable to many park areas. Plus cheap and convenient underground parking lot
This is a wonderful museum with several interesting and unique exhibits. The parking was easy and there was no entry fee which was nice.
We brought the kids for Skyline Mini Golf. They have 10 artist designed holes on the roof. We had a great time playing and enjoying the view!
The Walker Art Center is one of my favorite spots in Minneapolis. There is a parking garage that you do have to pay a few dollars an hour for. Even if the museum/restaurant isn’t open, the outdoor sculpture garden and indoor bathrooms are still open. This garden is a great place to take a stroll, have a picnic, go on a date, etc. During the summer, there’s also mini golf on the roof of the museum.
