Get yourself to Von Trier. This is classic, 150+-year old German drinking hall. Great German and N. European imports on draft and friendly, knowledgeable staff.Dine in: YesOutdoor seating: NoTakeout: YesDelivery: NoCurbside pickup: No
Always a good time, one of the more intimate bars on North Ave when you're hanging with a group or date. Although it's a German beer bar, the cocktails are great too.
I have never written a review before, but I wanted to express how special this place was to me during the 4 years I lived in Milwaukee. Truly a staple of the city. The German beer is unmatched, and that's coming from someone who spent some time in Germany. The Schwarzbier and Hefe Weiss are top tier. Their food is wonderful as well. Please keep this place alive.
The only dining "rooms" are an outdoor patio or the small bar area. Not sure what they use the "Back Room" shown on the website for, but we certainly were not allowed to eat in there. The staff was very friendly and the bartender was attentive. Our server on the other hand, not so much interested in serving. She was more interested in flirting with the male patrons at the bar and her male co-workers than paying attention to her customers. She rarely came to the table, and we spent much of the evening having to flag her over - which she still didn't see so her male counterpart had to point out we were looking for her. The food was a mix of good and disappointing. I ordered the Schnitz Bitz appetizer to go with my drink as I waited for the rest of my party to arrive. They are described as being nuggets. What was brought to the table were - well not even tenders - they were like half of a flattened chicken breast. They were huge. Not an appetizer, and certainly barely shareable in this form. The flavor, however was excellent. Had they been what was actually described on the menu, they would have been perfect. Maybe cut up a chicken breast to obtain the nugget size as printed on the menu. For dinner I chose the Jaegerschnitzel. The description made this dish sound wonderfully flavorful so I was really looking forward to it. Unfortunately, had there not been sauerkraut on the plate, there would not have been any flavor at all. Major disappointment. Update: I became very ill for a few days and assumed it was just coincidence. However one of the other people in our group ordered the same thing I did, and I was informed he too became very ill for a few days. Not a good thing. Parking: Horrendous. East side. Timing is everything. Take a bus or rideshare.
This place is just as good as I remember it. Great food, friendly service, and a pleasant atmosphere. Love all the German stuff in the bar/restaurant area.Food: 5/5
Excellent place with excellent huge pints of german beers and cool cocktails. The espresso martini were so delicious I ordered 4 of them. I only tried the cheese curds but they also have other meals. Finally the ambiance and European inspired decoration is very stunning. Friendly staff too. What else do you need ? Go.
Have been coming here for several months, but this past visit was pretty disappointing. We came on a Friday for fish like we usually do and they cut their portions down significantly. The appetizer was more filling than the entree was. I usually look forward to getting the potato pancakes as well and I took one bite and was turned off. Their french fries have always been the best fries we’ve ever had at any restaurant too, and tonight they were just okay. Not sure when I’ll be eager to make the hour’s drive up here to visit again.
Charming, warm environment and staff. Eye catching artworks. Has amazing beer and cheese curds!
Attended an event in the back room. Excellent authentic German food red cabbage would have been the perfect addition! Service was good, bartenders/ managers were very attentive.Food: 5/5
A very German pub, very dark inside, not too busy on a Thursday night, felt very Milwaukee. We didn't notice the outdoor seating until after we were done and was walking back to our car, and noticed that it was packed outside and looked so pretty with string lights and music. I thought it was a different restaurant until I got home and saw pictures from other yelpers. Must try it next time! Service was solid, and the beer was good. At least, my friends tell me they were I can't have any beer at the moment. I needed something keto friendly, so ordered the Currywurst. Fried brats were so good with the Haus mustard and the curry flavor! My friend ate all my spatzle in a wink saying it was super good. I agreed after taking a bite, but couldn't eat more cuz of the keto. Another friend had ordered the Smoked Hungarian, which came with hot dog buns. I tried just the sausage and loved it more than the fried brats. Maybe I can get this next time without the buns. No one else ate, as we had all had dinner already, but had more beer. And water, sadly for me. lol
