Vertex Sky Bar occupies the top floors of the Hotel Alex Johnson. Guests and members can enjoy breathtaking views, fine cuisine and top-label spirits.

Story

A Rapid City restaurant and bar without equal, Vertex Sky Bar combines modern features and traditional architecture with an unforgettable view. Vertex is located on the top two floors of the Hotel Historic Alex Johnson. Both levels offer indoor seating and an outdoor deck with gas-heated fire pits.

Panoramic views allow guests to experience an incredible view of the Black Hills, Dinosaur Hill, the southern buttes and gorgeous prairie.

Vertex Sky Bar offers hotel guests and Vertex Club members a wide selection of expertly-mixed cocktails, world-class spirits, and a variety of fine wine and beer. Our kitchen has crafted an exquisite menu, complete with decadent appetizers, gourmet entrees and savory desserts.

I went to vertex bar the first time I was in town and the bartender gave me the lowdown on the town in addition to Great drinks. Paul is a good example of a combination of both an old-school Western bartender who knows the lay of the land and someone who has a good feel for the modern. Great personality and even better drinks!

Great ambience, but bad service and worse food. Food took 40 min and the waitress completely forgot the appetizer we ordered. I ordered a $36 steak that was cold by the time I got it, and was tough, gristly and seemed like it had been frozen. I ordered a side of asparagus and got 2 (yes two) asparagus spears. For $3 I added mushrooms and onions to my steak and received 5 or 6 barely seared (and off-tasting) salad mushroom slices that had clearly been borrowed from the salad bar. This is supposed to be an exclusive place with high end food, and it probably once was. However, it's clear that penny-wise management in the kitchen is hurting what could otherwise be a great upscale dining experience.

Vertex has the best bartenders and waitstaff in town. Cocktails are great and at a reasonable price. With the newly renovated kitchen, I bet their new menu is going to be phenomenal.

The ONLY good thing about this place is the 'ok' view. The staff and kitchen is extremely slow, the food is over priced for the quality, and the drinks are way over priced. Did not have a good experience at all!
