The amount of literal garbage on the shelves is gross. Empty coffee cups just sitting there, nearly every aisle. You can’t actually shop because you’re constantly being bonked around by a staff member. While I appreciate new items coming to the shelves, I don’t appreciate being shoved out of the way multiple times a visit. The items being sold are usually caked in food, grease etc. Cups, plates, bowls, small appliances are filthy and disgusting. Much of the clothing has holes, stains, or rips. The prices are astronomical. $17 for a summer dress? The amount of Shein clothing being sold at the same cost as it is to buy new. I suppose with new fixtures, we will see a price hike again. I don’t think this location is worth supporting.
If you're trying to avoid supporting American companies, there's something else to consider. Although the donations sold at Value Village come from Canadians, the profits ultimately go to Savers Value Village, Inc., a U.S.-based company headquartered in Bellevue, Washington. So, technically, you are supporting an American company.nnTo be fair, Diabetes Canada has disclosed that in 2024 it received $3.7 million through its reusable goods program with Value Village via the National Diabetes Trust. When asked directly, Diabetes Canada reported that Value Village generates, on average, about $5 million CAD per year net for the organization.nnWith 165 locations in Canada that averages to $22,424 going to Diabetes Canada, no longer such a big number considering $3.7 million sounds big. In 2024 the Net Sales were $586.97 million or $4.9 million per location averaging $13,300 per day. You can gross a great deal of wealth when your inventory is free. All this information is available on the Internet.nnWith many independent thrift stores no longer operating, donating usable items to Value Village may still be a better option than sending them to the landfill.nnFor me, though, the decision became personal. My dog and I used to stop in during our long winter walks to warm up and often made an impulse purchase or two. Even though he was cleaner and better behaved than many of the shoppers, the store chose to ban dogs. As a result, I stopped both donating and shopping there.nnThese days, I look for opportunities to donate to local churches and other nonprofit organizations that directly support the community, rather than a for-profit retailer, especially one who is dog unfriendly!
We dropped off quite a lot of household items and were greeted by a very polite and friendly young man. He was extremely courteous. Unfortunately, a female supervisor came out and spoke very abruptly to him concerning an item that the store didn’t take . She was exactly the opposite with her social skills.nWhile the context of what she said to him was fine, she never spoke to us directly and she was rude. I rate five stars for this young man and zero for the supervisor…so a three star rating.
The prices here are disgustingly high. They're charging more than brand new for 98% of what I looked at today. $10.99 for basic long sleeve tees is WAY too much- and that was the average price! I refuse to support this location and will never come here again. This is completely unethical and insulting.
Horrible experience. My cart got stolen after literally less than a minute of me being turned around. I asked the manager if i can see any camera footage or if anyone can spot it for me, but they starts talking to me in a rude way. either way the stuff here is overpriced
