A nice day trip or stop when traveling along the Trans Canada Highway. One of only two build and the highest life lock. It's a neat sight to watch. Great area for a picnic! The Park store offers a short history of the Trent-Severn waterway.
The lift lock, itself, really is amazing and I loved watching it in action as well as admiring the design and history of the locks. The reason I didn’t give this site a 5/5 is the parks building that welcomes visitors from the parking lot. Looks like they had to close the building down and it has fallen into disrepair. And I watched as visitors circled the building looking for the washrooms there are washrooms at the top of the lift locks on the same side of the Trent as the parking lot. There are also picnic tables and lots of places to sit and the parking lot is good.
July 20, 2024 got to go for a free ride in the lift lock 21 and lock 20 in our canoe with hundreds of other canoes and kayaks. It was great fun! Lock and Paddle day with Parks Canada. I would recommend it.
It was a truly enriching experience to gain knowledge about the world's highest liftlock. Although it is a lesser-known attraction in the Peterborough region, it is undoubtedly a remarkable place to cherish moments with loved ones.
A truly distinctive piece of architecture. The history is well-preserved and narrated. Although I was unable to visit the museum or theater, it is an incredible location to visit if you are interested in waterway structures and lift locks.
