Pretty cool, something neat to see amongst the billion buildings in Vancouver, do you know each vehicle in the pile...without looking it up,lol?
As an art piece, it is OK. I thought it was pretty neat when I first saw it, but taking the SkyTrain into downtown for work has stripped the Trans Am Totem of its novelty and any enduring allure a piece of art should have. Bird poop starting to build up on the Trans Am. Could there be better art to take its place? Absolutely. I'm open to having it replaced. Trans Am 7 Series Civic Golf ???
Trans Am Totem is interesting, everytime i see it I think about what would happen to the cars that are balanced on top of each other in case of a big storm or an earthquake, I wouldn't want to be there lol. The area nearby is nice though. It is near the science world and you can go for a nice walk there.
This contemporary art work was installed in 2014-2015. It features five cars stacked on top of a tall trunk of an old tree. A Cedar tree rather than the backbone of the lumber industry in the north west Pacific, the Douglas Fir. Like most of the work in this genre the piece carries little significance. We do not know why the tree has been committed, or what we should make of the stack of cars. A defamation of the auto industry or a glorification of automobile wrecking yards? Is this pop culture or counter culture? Coming across as a sardonic personal statement the work does not embody a positive message. That is too much for the contemporary artist playing out a marginalized role on the periphery of privileged society. But neither does the work engage any of the urban functions timelessly performed by monumental art pieces. This pile of cars on a stick does not mark a place, offer us an identifying reference along an urban spine, or terminate an urban vista. Like so many other events in the automobile landscape it is best appreciated passing by on a speeding automobile. It most noticeable achievement would seem to be its stubborn resistance to engage in the process of creating urban memory. Who can tell? Maybe 300 years from now the cars will be valuable collectibles.
So ugly. I remember when they put this up. Unattractive, creativly bankrupt, and an insult to the word "totem." It has zero artistic merrit and is a scar on the beautiful face of Vancouver.
This remark on how far transportation has come as well as the critique of today's consumer culture is expressed in a fun and interesting display. It breaks its concrete surroundings up with an interesting sight; I love it.
I saw this riding on the SkyTrain and had to get a closer look. I think this is very eye catching and fun. Highly recommend stopping by if you are interested in art or sculpture!
I wouldn't make a special trip to see this or go out of my way, but if you are walking from the Olympic Village to Rogers Arena, it is along the way and is kind of a quirky, fun, and unique Vancouver piece of work.
Found this by accident when we lost our way downtown Vancouver. Worth the sight. It's an interesting piece of architecture close to the Chinatown area. Wonder who came up with the idea.
If I wanted to see scrap cars I would go to a wrecking yard. Where this "sculpture" belongs. Too ugly for words.
