The Wooden Monkey

My sister and I ate here twice in June 2022. My sister has to avoid gluten, which made this restaurant a treasure. The servers were friendly and knowledgeable and the food was delicious! We had the “fried” fish from the lighter fares menu. It was a huge portion of fish, perfectly cooked and very fresh. The potatoes were yummy and their take on coleslaw was very tasty. We also had the fish cakes which were also very enjoyable and very fresh tasting. It was so good we had nachos at their Dartmouth location another day. I just wish they had Wooden Monkey t-shirts.

Very good service with good food. The reason for 4 stars is that it's good food but not great food. We were a large group so we got a chance to try quite a few items. Everything was decent but just lacking that little bit extra to out it over the top. For ex, the scallops in the pasta were a bit over cooked. The pasta itself was a bit underseasoned. There were a good things as well, the brushetta was awesome, the caeser salad was pretty good and the pork loin tacos were good. I think it's safe to say we enjoyed the appies more than the entrées.

Just stopped in for happy hour on the patio — beer was cold and the staff especially our server from California! was fantastically pleasant and attentive. Would be really nice if there were more mocktail options for those who don’t drink alcohol! Had the garlic fingers on a whim! Pretty delicious with our beers. Would totally come again!

The seitan donair was really good 5/5 stars! And the roasties were really good too! The vegetarian special was not good, it tasted like left over food from yesterday. The pasta over cooked, cold and the “roasted vegetables” were just vegetables cut and thrown on the plate! The fish cakes would be a 3/5 nothing crazy…. The garlic “pizza” was small but it is what it said it was. Overall pretty decent restaurant but the portions didn’t really justify the price. The concept behind the restaurant is nice.

Absolutely loved this place. As a vegan with an omni partner, we were both impressed. We came 2 nights in a row. I had a seitan wrap of some sort one night and tonight a vegetable curry bowl with tofu pictured with nachos with vegan cheese for the appetizer. Bf first night had a braised beef dish and tonight did a personal sized pizza. If we lived here in Halifax, we'd be regulars!

We chose the Wooden Monkey by chance and had the most delightful experience. The atmosphere is quintessential Halifax and the story of why the restaurant was founded is interesting. We started with a flight of draft of locally crafted beers then moved on to our meals. We ordered the Cajun Haddock and I took a photo for my daughter as she is a budding chef. The presentation was appealing but one bite revealed its absolute perfection of fresh taste and texture of flavors dancing upon the tongue. The dish came with vegetables cooked to perfection delicately seasoned to complement the natural flavors of the fresh vegetables. We chose the sweet potatoes as our side and the meal came with a homemade mayonnaise seasoned with curry which complemened the array of other flavours. The medley of color taste and flavors were exquisite. The staff were friendly and professional. We finished off the meal sharing a slice of their signature dessert of chocolate tofu pie. The base was nutty and the pie not too sweet. I will be highly recommending anyone visiting Halifax to definitely add the Wooden Monkey on their list of must go!!!! Fabulous place

Very recomendable place. Very good good. I forgot to took pictures of my food. I get a chorizo goat cheese pasta and my daughter get a veggie curry and I will say both were delicious. If you visit this place be sure that order the tofu chocolate pie for dessert, it is delicious and you will not believe is tofu. 100% I will come back.

High quality food, delectable dishes. Good service. Lot of vegan and vegetarian options. Might even be the restaurant with the most number of vegan options in the city. Locally sourced ingredients and small business owner. Love their story. One of my favorite places in Halifax to eat out. Vegetarian options: Lot of vegan and vegetarian options. Ordered Fish and chips for takeout. Well packaged. There is a twist to fish and chips. Personally for me it was a bit dry and way too healthy for my taste . The potato wedges were nothing special. The salad was good. Get something to drink with the dish to wash down as overall it felt dry.

Honestly not a great experience. Our server was either stoned or just bad at his job. I had the salmon, she had the chicken bacon penne. The salmon was okay but i was honestly more pleased by the potatoes which is sad. The penne was about as bland as it gets. I expected much better for the price. Really nice atmosphere for a date, but not somewheres id ever go back to or recommend.
