The White Hart

About

The White Hart, nestled in the foothills of the Berkshires in picturesque Salisbury, Connecticut. Reopened August 27, 2014.

Story

The White Hart, nestled in the foothills of the Berkshires in picturesque Salisbury, Connecticut, draws its name from its counterpart in Salisbury, England. Built in 1806, the inn had humble beginnings as a small tavern with only a few rooms. Some of the charming features of this original building can still be seen in the historic Tap Room. in 1867, a substantial addition was made to the original structure. Since then, The White Hart Inn has been run as a country inn, enjoying a long and illustrious career, being owned at one time by Edsel Ford of the Ford Motor Company. Mr. Ford purchased the inn reputedly so that he would always have a room while his son attended neighboring Hotchkiss School. Through the years, the popularity of the inn generated the need for additional rooms, and the Gideon Smith House, once a private girls’ school, was annexed to accommodate the demand. At one time, the Inn held a total of 33 guest rooms.

2010 has brought yet another transformation to the White Hart with renovations in both our restaurant and the hotel. Our guest rooms are reconfigured and updated. Dinning space expanded to include the Pint Room, Front Hall and Hunt Room as well as additional porch dining.

We will be reopening Labor Day Weekend of 2014.

Each of the 16 guest rooms are completely refurbished with hardwood floors and rugs, new and expanded bathrooms with Carrera marble and wainscoting; four poster king size bed, luxurious Frette linens; wallpaper designed by Matthew Smyth, elegant tapestries and artwork. The emphasis of each room is on individual style, comfort and tranquility. Our suites feature a king bed in the bedroom and separate sitting room with Pullman kitchen. Other accommodations include a bedroom with two double beds or a king bed. Each room has one or more flat screen televisions, DVD players, radio with iPod hook up and mini bar stocked with tasty homemade goodies. A continental breakfast in our restaurant is included with all accommodations.

Quaint, clean, comfortable, friendly, classic, charming and quiet all come to mind. Everyone and everything was perfect but Rory was exceptional! From the time we called to say we were running late to the goodbye, he, and everything, was above and beyond. We got a nice upgrade to a 2 room suite with 2 bathrooms that was elegant and potentially the cleanest room I have ever had. I am the guy who pulls down the sheets to check for hair or stains or bugs. I like to look in the corners to see if they have been cleaned. I wear flip flops in the shower. Sometimes, I am embarrassed to admit, I have even been know to bring my own sheet and pillow case. This place was tasteful, and clean. The staff was polite and professional beyond expectations. Rory is from right out of a movie. Unbelievably attentive and professional. Besides the accommodations, the food was quite good so there is no need to leave the grounds if you don't want to. We had dinner in our room one night, dinner in the very charming 200 hundred something year old "pub" / dining space with original floors and wonderful fireplace, and we ate both our breakfasts at the on site White Hart Provisions which was a very cute little country bistro/cafe/provisions spot that is included with the price of the room. Just fill out the card from your room with your fruit, beverage, pastry, granola option and hand it in for an above average hotel breakfast experience. We were visiting with 2 small children from NYC to get a little R&R, some New England charm and a little child friendly skiing. This Inn made for the perfect home base. Perfect.

We hosted our rehearsal dinner at The White Hart Inn and everything was exquisite. The staff was easy to work with and very accommodating. The food was excellent, which was not surprising, as every time I have eaten there, the food has been consistently well-executed and delicious. The room set up for the dinner was stunning and everyone was raving about how much they enjoyed themselves.
