I truly love this place big fight going back in time. The owner John is such a great guy. It is what you expect from a bed-and-breakfast type environment in Litchfield Hills. It's locally-owned and operated so I have no problem supporting my local business.
I give Tollgate Hill Inn 1 out of 5 stars because it was poorly kept and the customer service was subpar. When we arrived we noticed a 'For Sale' sign next to the entrance. I think that since the owners are trying to sell the inn, they stopped caring for the inn as you would expect when paying $200/night. Also, there were no employees on the grounds. Your key was in the lobby with a sheet of paper detailing where your room was and a phone number for the innkeeper, John. Our room was in the schoolhouse, where you are allowed to bring dogs. When we entered the room, there was a severe muskiness smell. We tried to open the windows the air out the room, but all but 2 were either painted shut or so cruddy that they would not open. Also around every single window, there was an assortment of dead bugs spiders, mosquitos, etc. The ground did not seem to be swept. The bed sheet had what appeared to be cigarette holes in it and we just hoped they were clean. The bathroom was very gross. The toilet seat had yellow stains on it. I don't think the back of the faucet in the sink had been cleaned in months. The shower had cleaning detergent all over it and there was a hair on one of the shower shelves. The towels had orange stains all over it. We called the innkeeper and politely tried to explain the state of our room and tried to change rooms. He said our room was the only available that allowed dogs, so we reluctantly compromised that our room needed a once over and he said he would send someone when we were out the next day. When we came back to our room the 2nd day, the only thing different was that someone had removed the febreeze spray bottle that was on our windowsill. When we called to check if anyone had been by, John said yes. When I asked about getting new towels to replace our stained ones, he directed us to where the housekeeper closet was and we could help ourselves. We found the vacuum cleaner and a bottle of Clorox and essentially cleaned our entire room. It's absolutely ridiculous that we would pay $200/night to clean our room, but since all other places were booked up we had no choice. The owners promptly charged our credit card after checkout we just left, there was no checkout process without an invoice or anything. Horrible horrible experience. But honestly, do not think this review will change anything since the owners are trying to sell anyway. The pictures on the website are not accurate, at least for room #9 in the school house. We feel completely ripped off.
This was probably my favorite place that I stayed at while in Connecticut. This is a small, privately owned family hotel and while dated, it's quaint and cozy. I was able to get the same room several weeks in a row, which has a fireplace that was restocked with wood each day. Being used to corporate chain hotels which are largely impersonal, such a small thing like having a fireplace for cold nights made a world of difference after a long day. The innkeeper was great, friendly and Accommodating
The Tollgate Hill Inn is a low-key and discreet place to stay away from the extreme fast pace of the city, a couple hours away. I stayed here in January for a winter retreat with my old firm and loved it. John and his family are very hospitable and thoughtful. The dinners were definitely above expectations and the breakfasts were incredible. Very comfortable and a memorable stay.
Beautifully scenic and quiet, great nearby restaurant. Hammocks and amazing scenery with great landscaping. Rooms left a little bit to be desired in terms of modernization, though the property has an older feeling and the rooms are in line with that feeling. Beds were hard and uncomfortable,
This was my first time to the East Coast. My husband found this beautiful colonial place to stay, with restaurant, on their web sight. As he would be working during the week this was perfect for me. He knows I love anything colonial and surprised me after reserving the suite. Our flight arrived late in the evening and we arrived at Tollgate late at night when you couldn’t see anything. Our key was left for us on the front desk with directions to our room. The Inn was a bit tired and run down. While our suite was very quaint and a nice room with original characteristics, it was tired and needed updating. I still loved our room and overlooked the drapes hanging off the broken rods and couches a bit run down. What I couldn’t overlook… There is no restaurant and/or tavern! The pictures on the website are very VERY misleading! The beautiful grounds, once painted red tavern and school house, quaint restaurant, outdoor eating area, and the overall grounds were rundown and nonexistent! With the exception of the Inn that’s now almost completely overgrown with shrubs and trees The other buildings are now painted gray with black trim and have a big pile of restaurant equipment and accessories piled in front. As my husband had to leave early for work while still dark outside, he didn’t get to see this as he left. I woke up, got ready for the day, and headed out to what I thought was the restaurant to have breakfast. No restaurant, no breakfast, no cars, and nobody around... literally! I was the only person on the premises!! I had no car and had overslept the very tiny, almost non existent continental breakfast. I called the manager to ask if the restaurant opened on certain days or certain evenings. He told me the restaurant had been closed down for about five years and that they were getting ready to remodel/refurbish the entire property, with the restaurant being phase 1. I then asked about Ice as they had an icemaker that was running but no ice. He told me, “no it had been broken for a while and if I wanted ice I needed to go down the road to the market.” He then said, “I hope that we weren’t misleading.” They are using the old website, hoping somebody will show up at night, not explore until the next day when there’s nobody around to talk to. My husband was so disappointed as he tried so hard to make our lodging a wonderful surprise for me. Thankfully we had some beef jerky and cheese sticks to get me by until my husband returned to get me for dinner. Haha Thankfully I am a very laid-back person and rolled with it. I have to say it was extremely quiet and relaxing, just not at all what was posted on the website. If you would like to stay here, make sure you call and ask if everything has been remodeled and everything opened before you book!
Tired, Outdated & In Disrepair.... Am very sorry to have to say--this place is rundown & not well maintained. The room is relatively clean, however the A/C has 1 setting--71* & high fan, the bathroom has peeling laminate , the tub drips nonstop, the sink needs to be snaked, the sofa has ripped & stained cushions.. There is no hair dryer. In addition, no one mans the front desk so there's no way to ask for help. Surely there are better places to stay in Leitchfield.
Very nice place. I just couldn't sleep with the pillows. But it's a nice inn and for sale if you're looking for a small business
Great place to stay, quiet and comfortable. Room was clean, we appreciated our time here.
Was here in 1996..was a nice place..restaurant at time was great..tap room was packed..real cozy spot on a cold nite..sorry to hear not same
