The Ridges Sanctuary

About

"Some counties in the nation would spend millions of dollars to reproduce artificially what nature has formed at Baileys Harbor." -- Albert Fuller, 1937 www.RidgesSanctuary.org

Story

A unique pristine nature area on the Lake Michigan shore. Made up of a series of beach ridges and swales, the Sanctuary harbors a diversity of habitats which makes it the most biologically diverse area in Wisconsin. On the property are the historic Baileys Harbor Range Lights that used to guide ships into Baileys Harbor when it was the busiest harbor on Lake Michigan north of Milwaukee.

Mission

The mission of the Ridges Sanctuary is to protect the Sanctuary and inspire stewardship of natural areas through programs of education, outreach and research.

Products

Over 5 miles of trails are open year-round for hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Educational opportunities include summer children's programs, adult and family workshops, naturalist-guided hikes, and special events. Our Nature Store features field guides, puppets, T-shirts, equipment for nature exploration, and much more.

A unique sanctuary made by dunes. I loved the winding trails and the different ecosystems that happened on each ridge.

A new boardwalk allows everyone the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty found at The Ridges. The nature center has educational resources for children and adults. The diversity in plant and animal life is seasonal and worth stopping several times through out the year. No dogs allowed in order to keep the preserve pristine. Bring bug spray and your camera.

Lovely and serene hikes through the forest await you here. Rare and wonderful plants surround the hiking paths while birds perch along the water. Take the time to learn about the lighthouses--fascinating. This is great place to take a cool hike on a hot day!
