The Elgin & Winter Garden Theatre Centre

About

Official page of the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre – a National Historic Site and the world’s last operating double-decker theatre.

Story

In 1913, prominent New York architect Thomas W. Lamb designed this remarkable theatre complex, which was constructed on Yonge Street in downtown Toronto over an eight-month period. The complex featured two large theatres, stacked one above the other, and was the Canadian flagship for Marcus Loew’s growing chain of vaudeville houses. Fewer than a dozen double-decker theatres were built worldwide and Loew’s was the only one ever built in Canada.
Although vaudeville was extremely popular at the time, movies were the coming mass entertainment. By 1930, the Elgin had been wired for sound and the live acts discontinued. The Winter Garden, which had been closed in 1928, was abandoned. The Elgin had operated continuously until 1981 and had undergone several periods of renovation before gradually being allowed to slide into disrepair.
In 1981, the Ontario Heritage Trust purchased the building, thus securing its future. Recognizing the historical and architectural importance of the complex, the Trust embarked on a plan to carry out the largest theatre restoration ever undertaken in Canada. The fully restored Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre re-opened on December 15, 1989.
Today the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre is a National Historic Site and is host to many live performances including concerts, musicals, operas and stand-up comics. It is also a venue for TIFF film galas and home to Ross Petty Productions and Opera Atelier.

We came here for the Xmas menu lunch and did feel the experience was overall positive. The staff were courteous and patient and managed the whole booking and dining well. We had a major gripe where 3 of us who had ordered the roast beef option ended up with a very tough and chewy meat that was really hard to swallow. The staff understood the situation and handled the problem by resolving it in the final bill. I have eaten at many places so this issue didn't derail our experience. The appetizers and dessert were great. The turkey main dish option was also wonderful. The roast trimmings were great too. Therefore as the rest of the food were good we do believe the tough beef was more of a minor error in that batch of roast beef and don't reflect the true culinary capabilities of the kitchen. I would recommend this pub for anyone who are looking for few drinks and pub food in and around Notting Hill area.
Had dinner and a pint here during a recent London vacation first time out of the US since covid! Really spectacular pub that dates to the 19th century. Now it's a high endish type of place. Really enjoyed my steak dinner and boo loved her fish and chips. Service was great, no complaints.
Just having the Christmas party with the team and it was really nice. Everyone enjoyed the atmosphere. We've been offered a semiprivate area that was waiting for us. The food was delicious and Nick very overwhelmed by the busy service did manage to keep his smile till the end and to be attentive to our requests. Recommended
A group of us went for Sunday roast in early January. The food took a long wait to arrive and was disappointing. Overdone beef and mediocre Yorkshire pudding. The veggie roast was okay though
It’s coming home - wonderful place and thanks Biagio for the recommendation on the Salt Beef Sandwich. The triple cooked chips were delightful and perfectly washed down with a fantastic Bloody Mary. The Eton mess was amazing!
Amazing trad pub ..nice drinks..very good english classic food. And smiles on every faces..a precious place. A need in london now
Went here for a Sunday roast with my family who was visiting London and the whole experience was great. Got a bottle of wine for the table which was absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced. The food was incredible - the cauliflower cheese is to die for and the roast potatoes are so crispy. Portion sizes were big, and all of the prices were very reasonable. We finished the meal with the sticky toffee pudding which was absolutely insane. The staff was so friendly, attentive and helpful. Would very much recommend the Elgin for a Sunday roast or any other occasion!.
Impressive place with, a warm, welcoming and friendly ambience. Was particularly grateful to the member of staff who disceetly dealt with my clumsily knocking over my drink to include dousing a colleague to the point of, very kindly giving me a replacement without any fuss and, quite unexpectedly. Very much appreciated, this considerate customer care!!
Great pub! Very comfortable with deep leather chairs, nice views of passers by from its huge windows. Just an enjoyable place to pass the time and have a drink.
Great fish and chips. Bangers and mash be good also
