The Basilica Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

Story

The Basilica-Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador is the metropolitan cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. John's, Newfoundland and the mother church and symbol of Roman Catholicism in Newfoundland. The Basilica-Cathedral was the largest building project to its date in Newfoundland history. Construction lasted from the excavation of the ground in May 1839, through the laying of the cornerstone in May 1841, until the completion and consecration on September 9, 1855. At this time, it was the largest church building in North America and remains the second largest in Canada behind Saint Joseph's Oratory in Montreal. On October 17, 2007, Bishop Martin Currie of the Grand Falls diocese was appointed archbishop of St. John's. He assumed his position on November 30, 2007.HistoryBuilt between 1839–1855, the basilica is located on the highest ridge overlooking the city of St. John's. The church is not oriented on the liturgically correct east-west axis, but faces toward the narrows that form the entrance to St. John's harbour. The Basilica-Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is built in the form of a Latin cross and in the Lombard Romanesque style of a Roman basilica. It was designed for Bishop Michael Anthony Fleming by the German architect Ole Joergen Schmidt, though Fleming also seems to have had plans prepared by the distinguished Irish architect John Philpot Jones of Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland, and also consulted with James Murphy, a native of Dublin, Ireland on the final plans for the cathedral. Construction was initially supervised by the Waterford contractor Michael McGrath, but later superintended by stonemason and sculptor James Purcell of Cork, Ireland, who also designed and built a small wooden church, Christchurch, for the community of Quidi Vidi near St. John's.

We stopped by this beautiful church as it was just up the hill from our suite in a Jellybean house. You can go in on your own and they had anyoung adult / student available to answer any questions.nnThe outside with all the stonework and 2 large clock towers was magnificent! Inside they had many beautiful stained glass windows and a ginormous wood organ that is a feat of human ingenuity!nnEntrance is by donation and they have QR codes barcode that you can use your phone to donate $5, $10 or $20. Stop by of you’re in St John’s!
Couldn't go in because of a wedding, but looking through the door it seems like a wonderful Basilica. The exterior is very impressive, large and ornately decorated. It sits atop the hill and would have had the best view across the harbour when built. Sadly, city growth has limited that view, but it is still very good. The entrance to the Basilica is also impressive with a large arch and statuary. It's a good walk from the harbour, about 15 minutes, with quite a steep incline. Worth the walk.
Very cool building. Impressive architecture and stained glass windows. Our tour guide provided lots of interesting info. His dad and brothers helped work on the ceilings in the 1950's I believe.
I'm RC ok, Recovering Catholic and I've lived in St. John's for a couple of decades or more, yet have never visited the Basilica. It was always wrapped in scaffolding and never all that inviting. Now it has been fully restored, it really is quite an impressive building. I went to mass and wasn't struck down, so is there hope for me? last Sunday evening, and I must admit, I spent most of it admiring the building. Since the evening was drawing in, unfortunately the stained glass didn't stand out, but still it is a beautiful building inside If churches are your thing, check this historic one out next time you're in town.
Worth seeing. Surprisingly big. Awesome ceiling and central location. I believe its been around for quite some time too. Very close to The Rooms.
