A very nice Japanese establishment. I had been wanting to try some food from this place. I had recently given birth to my son who is half Japanese. It seemed fitting to celebrate our first meal back from the hospital with a glorious feast. Everything was very spectacular, the presentation, taste, quality and accoutrements.
TAKENAKEA: ONIGIRI CAFE TAG AND SAVE AND MARK YOUR CALENDARS Takenaka will be opening the first Onigiri Cafe in Vancouver on March 9th. Here are 3 reasons why you should go! 1 They have over 20 types of Onigiri to choose from and they're all filled. You can get karaage to salmon mayo to soy marinaded egg to even uni! Definitely need to grab multiple and try them out. 2 They have a great deal for both breakfast and lunch menu. Their breakfast combo starts off at $10 and their lunch starts off at $21. You can customize your onigiri for the combo and customize your lunch as well. 3 They have latte and drinks and a perfect place to study and work. I love how this place is so cozy and you can enjoy a coffee, latte, tea and even juice while doing some studying/work. Their service is really good and it's quite homey inside. Definitely check them out.
Long line up for dine-in. Miso Soup is free to refill. Cheese cake tastes too normal, but not sweet. The main dish in the lunch combo is pork belly.
Finally Japanese Street cuisine in Canada! Takenaka gets so many points for flavour and texture. But in essence it is an fusion of quality produce cooked in a quality way with acute attention to detail. Eventhough I just ordered the chicken currey I can tell by having the rice, the perfectly cooked egg and chicken that this meals on wheels could do ramen, donburi, sushi and other foods very well. I look forward to take'n'out food from Takenaka.
The Onigiri Cafe! Loved the food! Very authentic Japanese foods. The onigiri was made right with perfect mix of rice, filling, and nori. Was exactly how my grandma would make it! Everything came with it reminded me of what I was familiar with growing up in Japan. There is room for improvement how they proceo the orders and manage the line-up tho. We did not wait for a seat nor food but it’s a small place, I would recommend to get there early.
I tried this limited menu item Ohanami Bento which comes with 12 yummy bites. This was catered to an event that I went to, so I did not actually order this myself at their food truck. My faves include the Omakase Aburi Sushi, Unagi Bara Chirashi & Whelk w/ Mentaiko Mayo. It’s fun and interesting to eat since each square has a different item, with unique flavours. I’d be interested to try their other menu items and bento boxes next time. Ohanami Bento $35
We ordered Osechi Japanese traditional new year meal for 2023 new year. There are two layers like bento boxes and 20 different kinds of dishes. They use gorgeous ingredients and everything taste delicious! For sure, we will order next year Osechi at Takenaka.
The truck happened to be in Kerrisdale so I was lucky enough to get the Omakase aburi sushi. I liked that there were 2 pieces of each flavour. Each sets flavour tasted unlike each other. I liked the different toppings. I would definitely go back if they are in the neighbourhood again and try their other dishes. The service is super friendly and it's fast.
Pricey. Nice presentation, but tastes like generic Fujiya. Ordered the family size a la carte platter. Nice presentation. Cold karrage and cold fried ebi. Aburi sushi cold and rice getting hard not much sear flavour. Large bara chirashi ok. Small for the price you’re paying. Not much variety or taste. Presentation is nice. The price they are charging you for their items, it will be a better option to take that money and eat in or take out in a restaurant where the food is freshly made hot. It would probably cost less than this take out and you would probably get more. I was extremely disappointed that this is all premade refrigerated food thrown into a sushi platter. Ordered on Uber eats the price of the platter was 57$ plus tax. The chirashi was 27 plus tax.
Ordered from Uber eat. Food was cold, the sauce was already solid in a summer hot night. Even the soup was lukewarm only. The bag said 7:15 and the driver arrived at 7:30, so not sure why it was already cold. All foods are too salty. The pork was dried and solid. It doesn’t taste as good as used to be. The almond tofu is just ok.
