My current work combines my floral design and pottery in a contemporary style with a Japanese influence that is both esthetically pleasing and functional.
About
My work is a unique fusion of floral elements and pottery. All items are designed and crafted by me. My pottery is created using both hand building and wheel throwing techniques. I use orchids, succulents and air plants to bring life into the human environment, while incorporating my unique pottery vessels in a contemporary style that is both pleasing to the eye and whimsical. I also make wonderful little tea pots, cups and bud vases for your favourite blooms.
Mika Sato was born in Hiroshima , Japan, and grew up surrounded by the bounty of nature that both nurtured and inspired her. In her youth, Mika studied the ancient floral art of Ikebana, and this has profoundly influenced her design aesthetic over the last twenty-five years.
Mika moved to Canada in 1997 and has spent time traveling and learning new styles and techniques in Europe , South East Asia, and North America. She particularly enjoyed working in a contemporary shop in Amsterdam.
In 2010 she decided to pursue her interest in pottery through classes with recognized Toronto potters. Most recently, she has been working independently at a local studio and has been creatively excited by her use of natural materials such as shells, seeds, corals, etc. She has been able to create one of a kind vessels to showcase her KOKEDAMA floral art.
Mika's designs have been available at the various flower shops she has worked for, as well as privately through her home based business.
Artist's Statement
"With many years of professional floral design as my foundation, I am excited to be combining Kokedama (a modern Japanese bonsai method of containing plants in balls of moss) and my new passion of pottery. I use orchids, succulents and air plants to add life to a living space on my unique pottery vessels in a contemporary style that is both pleasing to the eye and fun. I also make wonderful little tea pots, cups and bud vases for your favourite blooms. You will see interesting details in my work, which were achieved through the use of natural materials like shells, coral, and seeds."
