He did my annual inspection 2 years in a row. The last time they did it he said I need a new steering wheels, 2 new doors and a new drivers side floor. Then he hits me with a $500 bill and says they had to take the back tires off. Why would you go deeper into an inspection when the repairs were already $2000 and the truck is only worth $1500. Why not call me and say "hey, this thing needs a lot of work. Want us to go deeper into the inspection?" The best part is that it had all these problems 11 months ago when he did the inspection last time but didn't call any of them!
I recently dealt with Steve directly, regarding issues with my 2002 VW Golf TDI, and liked the experience. Although quite a bit distant from my home, I was referred to Steve's Diesel by another Oshawa shop, who did some repair work, but also indicated that the fuel injector pump was leaking, and suggested Steve's could potentially re-seal in place versus having to buy new. Given that the car had about 400,000km on it, such issues aren’t too much of a surprise. The assumption was that the outstanding issue I had with power loss / jerkiness was related to that. Steve's did rebuild the injector pump, for a price less than half of getting a new one. Steve was honest and indicated that it didn't appear necessary as there was no obvious fuel leakage, but we went for it anyway since the seals were hard and didn't want to wait for a problem later. However, Steve found out from a test drive that it wasn't the problem - it was the boost actuator for the turbo that had broken off! He could have done the injector pump and sent me on my way, but he didn’t – it was the test drive that told a different story. Steve suggested an economical stop-gap solution instead of a full repair, which I appreciated. I soon decided that I wanted a full repair, to minimize any future issues, but when initiated, the boost actuator was found to be completely shot. It was necessary to install a completely new turbo assembly, which wasn't cheap, but I understood that’s the way they came and not Steve’s fault. In the end, it was the two main items that got fixed, and having just driven the car around town and back home early this afternoon, the car is running fine. Steve also did some extra ‘niceties’ for me, which I appreciated. In the end though and combined with the above, it was the fact that Steve made himself available to talk to me directly, show me twice in the shop what the issues were, explain things, show me the parts as well as take photos, etc., that I think makes this kind of shop the place you want to go to. A few minor quibbles: shop hours are standard business hours, so it may be a bit difficult to get there if you don’t have flexibility in your work hours. However, they do have a means to drop off your car there when no one is around, and Steve did meet with me this Saturday morning to pick up the car, for which I was appreciative. His staff complement is limited, so it had taken me awhile to get into the shop, and it was two weeks until I got the car back, so be prepared to make arrangements around this. I had another vehicle I could use, so it wasn’t an issue for me. Overall I had spent more money than I had anticipated, but in the end, I am o-k with it. And yes, this is a real review by a real first-time customer. If you have doubts, call Steve’s and ask about invoice number 2161.
Had my truck towed there, reported the codes/issues over the phone to the lady that answered. I got a call a day or two later from the mechanic working on it saying he test drove it for a few hours and couldn't find a problem. He said he let it sit overnight in hopee that, after a complete cool down, he could replicate the problem. The following morning he took it for another long text drive by the sounds of it and still no luck he said. I told him what I told the lady that I originally talked to and he said he wished he'd had that info for diagnostics. $1500 for an IPR valve replace on an 06 f250 6.0 over 3 times what I've been quoted since. A little but of communication between the front desk and the actual person doing the work could have saved me 70%, $1000. I won't be fooled again.
I took my super duty there to have a turbo replaced the job took way longer than estimated by over a month when I got the truck back a bunch of parts were broken and not reinstalled I was also billed five times more than what I was quoted when I got the truck back finally fixed I blew the motor an hour after getting it back and they shrug their shoulders saying it wasn’t their fault. I’m stuck with a lot of wasted money and a truck that is in worse shape than it was when I took it to them
Simply the best service. I will never take my truck back to the Dodge dealership. Shady serviceman and twice the cost. Steve's diesel will take care of you and your vehicle.
