St. John's Fish Exchange

This place is terrific! Was given a great table upstairs, right near the windows. Had the Newfoundlander. The cod was cooked perfectly, and seasoned well. Didn't care for the cod tongues; used my tartar sauce for them. Glad I ordered the French country salad, as there were few vegetables on the plate. The mini potatoes that I got as a side were delicious. My only disappointment was with the flourless chocolate torte. It came with a drizzle of caramel on the top, which didn't work with the chocolate. The raspberry swirl, that was on the plate, was the perfect foil for the torte. If they'd put that on the torte, instead of the caramel, I would have liked it a lot more. The service was top notch and very accommodating.

Hands down my husband and I our favourite seafood place in Newfoundland! The Oysters and Calamari are absolutely AMAZING and so flavourful YOU MUST TRY IT!! We went oyster hopping to other restaurants during our trip and for sure St. John’s Fish Exchange was THE BEST! We are definitely coming back here when we visit Newfoundland again! Very nice atmosphere and nicely decorated establishment. Friendly and well-paced staff. We had the soup of the day to start with complimentary warm bread with butter. The Newfoundlander was a great way to sample a bunch of different items such as the cod’s tongue, brewis, pan fried cod, salted cod cake etc. Their tacos were each uniquely flavoured. Great presentation overall. The reason for 3 stars is because all but the cod’s tongue and fries from the Newfoundlander were served at room temp… not sure if that’s done on purpose or if food got cold before being served.

Came here with a large group to eat in the private dining room. I think between the 12 of us we managed to try nearly every single thing on the menu. Everything was a hit. Service was fantastic. The oysters, shrimp, and calamari were the favourites appetizers among our group, and I especially enjoyed my first time having cod tongues and scrunchions. Lobster mac and cheese pictured had a really generous amount of lobster in it — absolutely worth the money. Even the vegans among us greatly enjoyed their visit.

This place was amazing! They have a great cocktail menu. I had the Old Hag and it was delicious. We ordered two of the special that night and we were crazy about both dishes! We've made reservations to come back our last night in town.

Visited on a Tuesday evening with a reservation for 7pm. We had requested 7:15pm but it was not available. When we arrived just before 7 there were 3 or 4 other parties waiting to be seated and we were advised that they slightly behind on Reservation. We waited 30 minutes during which time all other parties and several new arrivals were seated. At this point we were asked for the name on reservation they said oh, "your still here". The whole time the 4 of us had been standing within 3 feet of the desk. A few minutes later we were taken to our table which thank fully was an excellent location on the 2 level overlooking the Harbour. This was not our 1st visit to SJFE and as in the past the food was very good. Our appetizers were Scallops, Salt Fish Cake Fritters, Mussels and Bruschetta and all were delicious. For mains we had Stuff Chicken Breast, fish Tacos & the Salmon and rice special all of which were very good. In the case of the Chicken and the salmon both had a sauce that was a bit spicier then expected and while not "hot" might not be a great choice for anyone who does not like spicy food at all. For desert we has the daily special "wild berry crumble" basically a wild berry sauce with a thin cake top covered in whipped cream. The Desert was ok. The sauce seemed to me mostly Strawberries and left the impression they had used frozen not fresh. Personally I think it would have been much better served warm. The service at the table was great, the view was amazing and the food was good so all in all a great night out with family. For 4 adults including 3 drinks the meal came to $317.00 before tip. One of benefits of this restaurant is the fact that there is parking within the building.

Great good, nice ambiance, friendly staff. We loved all we had ordered, especially enjoyed the halibut, cod, cod tongues, roasted beets. Better make reservation to avoid disappointment.

Just stopped in for some apps and drinks on the way to an event. Food was delicious - especially loved the mussels and cod tongues, and the service so friendly! Will definitely be back to sample more next time we’re in town.

Excellent atmosphere and great dinning. The price range is around Keg level. They offer lots of gluten-free options. They have weekly dishes which is an excellent sign engaged kitchen team.

Probably the best place I’ve eaten while on the island. While visiting for a few days I had the opportunity to eat here twice and it did not disappoint. Food: The mussels were delicious, the fish and chips expertly made; the batter was not too dense and the fish was moist and tender. Ambiance: has an up scale inviting feel. While it has music playing in the background it’s not so loud that it makes it an annoyance. Service: the staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable of the dishes. More importantly the food was served in a timely manner. I was really pleased with the recommendations. Highly recommend!
