Update July 11 2022 - I love it, Wish I lived closer so I could eat here more often. But what happened to the bread on the meatloaf sandwich? The meatloaf is still outstanding, I'm not sure when they changed it from an Italian bun to this pita like bread but it takes a great sandwich and makes it very mediocre at best. Yuck. The Tomato salad is so delicious here, wow good! Update Jan 26 2022 - It's been quite a while since I've enjoyed the delicious food here, what with Covid and all I guess. But I had an appointment nearby so stopped in and grabbed a sandwich to bring home. Of course the cutlet parm, still incredible delicious! I've missed the pickles! Thanks for the delicious food again today. Original Review - I travel a lot, well not these days, but one thing I love and pretty much every city I've been to or town on any continent is the fact you can get a great sandwich pretty much anywhere. Calgary is my birthplace and I love this city, but I always tell people it is chain restaurant hell here. Spolumbos Is a special place, a place where everybody can feel welcome even though it is sports themed inside. It is owned by former Stampeder football players, and more often than not you are greeted by one of them coming in and yelled across the restaurant thank you when you were leaving. I don't mind the drive coming here because I know that the food is always incredible and then the atmosphere is great. I pretty much have to go-tos, either The Mamas meatloaf or the cutlet sandwich and I add hot peppers to both. Both of these sandwiches are so filling and you know you should only eat half and take the other half home but you can't stop because they taste too delicious with the amazing tomato sauce dripping down your hands and arms while eating them. Wow I'm getting hungry again! They also have a counter where you can buy different flavored sausages and a freezer where you can buy prepared meals all for very reasonable prices. This is a must eat at place if you are visiting Calgary and a must eat that place if you live here.
I’ve lived next door to this place for about two years now and only just walked in today. I now realize how much I’ve been missing out! The Reuben was fantastic, and the crew very friendly. 10/10 will recommend
Spolumbo's is another Calgary institution that's been around forever and hasn't lost a beat with both quality and service. Stopped in for the classic 9th Ave sandwich to go, which was excellent, had to split it with my gal and she just loved it, which left me wanting even more! The sausage counter is amazing because of the choices you have and they have an excellent burger patty that's both cheap and very tasty barbecued. I believe the patty is a mix of both pork and beef with herbs added for a surprisingly delicious combination. They also have ready to go meals like meatballs, lasagna, barca, and other assorted goodies. Absolutely the best deli in Calgary by a long shot!
Ordered the $100.00 eat-for-a-week package. For two of us, we were able to get 17 meals out of the items provided. It was all very delicious and well worth the cost. Recommend for anyone looking for freezer/fridge ready meals.
Very busy but we were still served quickly. We had a ruban and a Montreal smoked meat sandwich. Both good. We also bought a case of chicken apple sausage to bring home. Hands down my favorite sausage.
I can see the draw here, but we were underwhelmed. The sausage was warm but not charred, the egg salad was so-so, and the rolls were definitely sub-par, much too soft. We won't likely be back, but will stick to buying the sausages and grilling them ourselves at home.
I am a HUGE FAN. this business is a staple in the Calgary area. I'd like to not give such a great review because it's busy enough. However, it deserves and has earned all the accolades and praises it gets.
Spolumbo’s is the BEST place to get a turkey sandwich in Calgary. From start to finish they are absolutely delicious. The fruit tray that you can buy is super fresh and presented very well! Please note: I requested extra mayo and mustard on mine in the photos attached :
Stellar Italian Deli. I’m always torn when in Calgary between Spolumbo’s and Inglewood Drive In behind them. So I usually grab Spolumbos for dinner and Inglewood’s for lunch. Two of the best eateries in Alberta and they are only a 10 second walk from each other. That should be against the law lol. Spolumbos portions are very filling, and the taste and quality is AMAZING. Gluten free options for those that look for that. Plus dinners to take home and throw in the oven too. Their meatball sub is . Highly recommended. I rate this place a 10 on a scale of 1-5. So yourself a favour and check it out!
