Sparta Athletic Club

Some of the equipment is a little dated and it could use some sprucing up, but the staff is very friendly and helpful and there is a variety of classes and they have good weekday hours to fit into any schedule.

This gym used to have my respect, but since they "sold out" and turned into a corporate, Planet Fitness-like atmosphere, so to speak it has really gone down hill. They ship senior citizens in busses from a local nursing home to raise the volume of memberships, and since then the seniors complain that the upbeat music "gives them headaches" so I'm told. So now the real gym-goers are resigned to lift weights and run to twangy country music. I was even tricked by staff into thinking the dreadfully slow music, that I'd rather take a Xanax to, was temporary and renewed for three months. Then a week later I asked for 1/3 of my money back to take my business elsewhere; this resulted in pretty hostile words from management. I ended up skipping a song, about beer and trucks on a Friday night, on their ipod one day and a very masculine female manager approached me in a pretty malicious fashion. She then proceeded to get in my face and yell "ARE WE GOING TO HAVE A PROBLEM, GET OUT OF MY FACE!"; when she was the one facilitating the interaction looking like John J. Rambo's older sister. I gave the staff ample time to apologize and even asked the owner to contact me, in which neither was done. It saddens me to have to write this review, but management of this facility is really out of touch with the core members that frequent it to make real and visible strength/endurance gains. So if you're serious about your fitness would not recommend, but if you're going just to lie to yourself that walking on a treadmill once a week for an hour will somehow make you aesthetically less depressing, by all means this is your place!
