Sofra Restaurant

About

Sofra Authentic Turkish Cuisine is a local eatery that brings the rich history and flavours of Asia Minor to the streets of downtown Edmonton.

Story

The history of Asia Minor has given modern day Turkey an incredibly diverse cuisine. The land bridge between Europe and Asia has been a melting pot for cultures (and food!) for millenia. As a result, Turkish food is a wonderful fusion of Mediterranean, Balkan, Slavic, Caucasion, Central Asian, Middle Eastern, and North African cuisines. Sofra's menu incorporates dishes from all regions of Turkey and every "parent" cuisine is therefore represented.

All dishes are prepped daily by Chef Yuksel Gultekin who works by the "from scratch" rule. He makes everything from the dough you will see him rolling into pita and pizzas to the dressing on the greens to the many dips and meat marinades. Because olive groves abound in Turkey, olive oils and olives figure largely in Turkish cooking. Yuksel only uses cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil and black olives imported from Turkey for all food preparation. In fact, many of Sofra's ingredients and beverages are imported from Turkey. But because the long growing season in Turkey produces an abundance of fruit and vegetables, fresh local produce is equally essential to Yuksel's menu.

Yuksel's efforts to consistently provide fresh, quality food have been rewarded with the patronage of amazing guests (Sofra really does have the best customers!) and with many rave reviews.

One of our favorite restaurants! Typically we order the Sultan's table which includes hummus with pita, Bulgar wheat, salad, lamb, chicken, tuna, and baklava. We enjoy the dips The date is a favorite! and the pizzas are excellent. We've never had a bad meal or service here. Highly recommend.
Food is always fantastic here. The halloumi is just out of this world good, and it’s always part of our meal. It’s hard to recommend a specific dish, because they’re all very tasty. You cannot go wrong with either the fish, the kafta or the lamb. Cocktails are also very good, with a favourite of ours being the Sweet and Sour. Staff is very courteous and attentive, and the food comes out relatively quickly! I’d definitely recommend this place - highly worth it!
Cozy and warm ambiance. Unique layout makes for interesting decor. Service was friendly and the food was top notch. Flavourful for sure. Slightly smaller portions but given the taste, still worth it.
The meal was decent. Ambiance was pleasant. Considering there aren't many Turkish eats in Edmonton, it was unique. Prices were a little high for what you were served. Unfortunately, the Adana Kebab wasn't that great. My husband and I grew up eating kebabs and we know what beef tastes like. The texture and taste was off. Maybe it was mixed with lamb? It had a very spongy texture, similar to that of a sausage. The rest of the meal was pretty good. We had a Flatbread which had cheese, minced beef and herbs, which was delicious.
Can always depend on knowing that classic gems like sofra will always be an amazing night out. Food is fresh and cooked with delicately that any true foodie can appreciate. If you haven't been you need to make that a priority for your next night out on the town. Also a huge plus several beautiful vegetarian dishes to choose from Vegetarian options: A large variety to chose from that will satisfy any craving. Parking: Street parking available
We stumbled upon this restaurant after a disappointing experience at another restaurant in town. Our experience was exceptional and we all enjoyed our food. Everything from the eggplant halloumi to the baklava was flavorful and fresh. Very warm atmosphere and service. Highly recommend! Our waitress also gave us a recommendation for the next evening at another restaurant and that was also excellent!
Absolutely astonishing food and amazing service! The portions are more than filling with a variety of textures and rich flavors. I will definitely be back with family in the future! I highly recommend trying the pita and tuna and well, everything else too.
Unexpected, delightful and memorable. Our first visit to the summer, sleepy and deserted Edmonton was highlighted by discovering this little unassuming gem of a restaurant. A few minutes walk from our accommodation, the entire experience was amazing - starting with a pleasant atmosphere, fast and friendly service to a truly delicious flavourful meal. If you ever will have a chance to pay visit to this wonderful place, don't miss the opportunity!
I came in as a single patron when the restaurant was busy. They were able to accommodate me and sat me down. I had the the BBQ duck breast with a wine pairing that was recommended by the waitress. The duck was cooked perfectly, and the whole meal was amazing. I will recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area.
It was my first experience at Sofra and I will definitely be back. The food is outstanding. It may seem a little pricey, but the portions are generous. The pita bread is made fresh and the best I've ever tasted.
