Short Hills Provincial Park

Story

Short Hills Provincial Park is a provincial park located in the centre of the Niagara Peninsula, bordering the city of St. Catharines and the town of Pelham in the Niagara Region in southern Ontario, Canada. It occupies an area of. It also borders the new vineyard sub-appellation called the Short Hills Bench.Located on the southern edge of the Niagara Escarpment, the park is a jumble of small but steep hills ("short hills") and valleys created by the last ice age. The effect was only compounded when the Twelve Mile Creek cut through the sedimentary deposits and glacial till.Wildlife inhabiting the park include white-tailed deer, coyote, and meadow vole. Being at the north end of the Carolinian zone, many plants grow here that do not grow or are rarely found in other parts of Canada, including pawpaw, sweet chestnut and tulip-tree.The only park of its scale in Niagara, Short Hills Provincial Park is a prime destination for residents of nearby cities, especially St. Catharines and Niagara Falls. Popular activities include hiking, horseback riding, fishing and mountain biking.

I decided to take a day and go for a hike. It was my first time here but the website, friends of Short Hills was very helpful. I decided to take a two hour walk on terrace Creek trail. At the beginning of my hike there was Two inch stone gravel that made walking difficult but it was only for about twenty tmeters and the rest of the way was perfect walking conditions. I came across a confusing sign for a side trail and ended up going the wrong way and walked for an extra hour because of it. The park is beautiful and most of the trees are young but there are a few areas that had very old trees. I had a great time.

Nice place for a good 12km ride. The course was intermediate to advanced with a good deal of hard climbing... Would recommend to anyone that wants a different riding either. Trails can be a bit muddy and rooty..

Beautiful park with nicely kept trails. The falls and rivers are also beautiful to look at with their rocky beds.

I just LOVE it when dog owners are courteous enough to let their dogs run free without a leash, while at the same time screaming for them to "GET BACK HERE!!!" when they chase me for half a kilometre while I'm biking through the park.
