The "large" sandwiches are are ENORMOUS. Perfect Italian sandwich bread, delicious meats and cheeses with tasty accompaniments. Cash only, amazing value $9 when I got a large Bergen sandwich.
Hands down the best sandwich shop in JC. The bread is damn good and anything they make with it makes it complete. Be sure to bring cash as it is cash only. The prices are all reasonable with good portion sizes to guarantee you’ll be full. From the sandwiches to the platter to the pastries, you can’t go wrong here. They all hit home. Feel free to close your eyes, point at anything on the menu and be impressed. It may not look appealing but delicious they are. Highly recommended!
Love this place. Understated, no hoopla, no gimmicky marketing schemes to get people in, just a good old fashioned jersey city mom and pop shop from a time passed. Fresh pastries and rolls in the morning. Cash only. Go check it out.
Appearances can be deceptive, and there can be no better example of this than Second Street Bakery! From the outside, it looks pretty inconspicuous, but the food here is so good! I had the chicken cutlet parmigiana hero. It was pretty tasty, the chicken cutlet being layered with roasted peppers and fresh mozzarella, balsamic vinegar and olive oil. The regular size is more than enough for one person and costs only $4.50. But the star of the show was the St. Joe’s Sweet Ricotta Pastry. I had a taste of it while my hero was being prepared and promptly asked the sweet old lady behind the counter for one more last one remaining. It was the perfect combination of not-overly-sweet ricotta cheese with bread. Just thinking of it makes me want to go there for more. I highly recommend this place. And make sure you try the ricotta pastry! Also, note that this is a cash only place and it closes at 3 pm. Get there before they run out of the good stuff.
This is a review for the best sub place in town, Second Street Bakery. Not to be confused with second street deli a half block away. This place is an old school, cash only, hole in the wall that makes delicious sandwiches on their fresh baked bread. A whole sub sets you back a whopping $7. Treat yourself to dessert with one of the huge cinnamon rolls they make $2 and you still pay less than the other sandwich shops in the area. Place is tiny inside and cash only. I'd recommend in covid times calling ahead to place your order or standing outside after you place your order. The owner wears a mask and keeps his distance behind the counter so you feel comfortable ordering. I just tell him to keep the change now when I get my sandwich because it's worth every penny.
Such a small little bakery but don't let the size fool you. They make amazing baked goods that will want you to come back. You can tell that this is where the locals have been going for ages and it isn't too hard to find out why. There is no seating in the place but it's more for coming in and getting something quick. They are a cash ONLY establishment. If you want to go to a real bakery with plenty of options please go to this place!
A classic, old school Italian sandwich place. Cash only. Not really a pastry/cake kind of bakery. But all the bread and rolls are made in-house. I tried several items, and everything was fantastic. The Italian Combo on Sausage Bread, was one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. Picture attached. The roast beef and mutz was very fresh and full of flavor. The meatball roll and pepperoni roll were good. Prices were very reasonable. No seats, everything to go. I was using mass transit that day, so I had to wait until I got back over near the PATH station to find a place to eat. The wait was killing me, the food was heavy that's a good sign and smelled great an even better sign. I was not disappointed when I finally got to chow down!
Wow this joint is on point. Not bougie at all; no frills and all business. Run by an old Italian couple. Cash only. But out of a battered storefront come some amazing Italian sandwiches at tremendous value.
Great Sandwich and great Bread!
Go for their talk of the town sandwiches or lasagna with meatballs, stay for their chocolate bread! This place is wonderful and I can't believe after living in JC for a decade we are just now going to them. Every single thing they make is wonderful. Even just their "regular" bread !!! Prices are incredibly reasonable, especially for the value. So far we've had their lasagna and meatballs, antipasto salad, cheesecake cookie and chocolate bread and it is all delicious. Would be a great place to order food for loved ones and do a surprise drop off.
