Scotiabank

We were conducting a large Inter-Provincial real estate transaction. We sold a property in a different Province which we had purchased on a Scotiabank mortgage. We wanted to withdraw the money from that transaction from our personal account with Scotiabank to pay off a property in Quebec. We had coordinated everything so that the money from the deal would be deposited in our account on a Monday by our lawyer in British Columbia with documents in order to avoid having a freeze on the amount. On Tuesday morning we went to the Brossard location to withdraw the money for our Quebec real estate transaction and the Brossard branch wouldn't let us withdraw the money... this in spite of the fact that the money was in OUR account with NO HOLD and no freeze on the account. They said that "the notes on the previous days transaction at the British Columbia branch were not clear enough" and it had been a large deposit (several hundred thousand dollars) which made them uncomfortable. We spent two hours with the branch assistant manager arguing. He seemed like he thought he was Inspector Clouseau or something and that he thought something was fishy. Considering I work in Federal Law Enforcement I thought it was funny for the first ten minutes, but even after we had shown the documents from the real estate transaction and email communications with our lawyer and real estate agent to confirm the "legitimacy" of our transaction he still refused to let us withdraw the money, wanting to wait for the bank in B.C. to open, again, even though there was no freeze on the account and we had taken steps to ensure that all we had to do was come pick up the check. After two hours of waiting and arguing and multiple calls to the BC Branch trying to get somebody to answer I asked if I would need to call law enforcement as he had our money and wouldn't give it to us. He answered that he would cut the cheque without validating as "we seemed like honest people and he had a good feeling about us" but that if there were any problems he had our info. One of the most insulting things I've ever heard, especially considering the situation. So we closed all of our accounts and investments with Scotiabank and now have several hundred thousand dollars in investments with Desjardins, who have given us impeccable service in every interaction with them. Thanks Scotiabank Brossard, you gang of incompetent muppets. I'll never do business with your bank again and continue to tell everybody who I speak with about it to avoid you as well. Probably thousands or tens of thousands of dollars of commissions and fees lost because your Brossard staff are morons.
