Royal BC Museum

About

Since 1886 the Royal BC Museum has preserved and shared the human and natural histories of British Columbia.

Story

The Royal BC Museum Corporation is one of the foremost cultural institutions in the world. The museum was founded in 1886; the archives in 1894. In 2003 these two organizations integrated to become British Columbia's combined provincial museum and archives, collecting artifacts, documents and specimens of BC's natural and human history, safeguarding them for the future, and sharing them with the world.

Through research and education, we strive to broaden understanding about our province and inspire curiosity and wonder. We are passionate about sharing British Columbia's story with the millions of visitors who walk through our doors and explore our web site each year.

Our archives, exhibits and galleries change and grow as our understanding grows, and we endeavour to share our knowledge in original and exciting ways. Each exhibit and gallery tells important stories about British Columbia and provides an engaging and thought-provoking window on the province's past, present and future. Our archives provide a treasure trove of information for researchers and genealogists through the stories that are preserved here.

I hear this museum used to be so much more spectacular. I will say it’s still worth visiting but disappointing that they keep removing sections. Equally crazy that they thought about starting fresh with this museum quickly vetoed by the citizens of Victoria. The attention to detail that was given when these displays were first built still shows. Everything is in great shape. Old town is really special.nnJust an FYI, all the parking in front of the building is blocked off and more than half of the spots behind the building have been changed to reserved making parking very difficult. They also recently lost the cafe so they only have IMAX concession and a food truck out front. I really hope this changes soon!
Absolutely worth a visit while in Victoria. We spent several hours here and were impressed by how immersive and well-curated the exhibits are. The replica village was beautifully done and really made you feel like you were stepping back in time, and the model ship display was incredibly detailed and fascinating to walk through.nnOne highlight was the woolly mammoth recreation—seeing parts of the exhibit with real ice was such a cool literally! and unexpected touch that made it feel extra realistic. We also really enjoyed the temporary exhibit featuring music, which added an engaging, modern contrast to the historical displays.nnOverall, the exhibits were interactive, educational, and thoughtfully designed especially the exhibit on vanishing aboriginal languages. This is a must-see attraction in Victoria and easily a 5-star experience. Ticket prices are reasonable at $20 each.
A very exquisite museum. Although there is an admission fee, it is absolutely worth it. The design is elegant and compact, making it a place you don’t want to leave. I will definitely come back to revisit it.
Omg this was such a great visit. I got to see my local peeps highlighted in their international humanistic contributions to humanity through music. I showed my kiddo and shed a proud tear. So proud to see this and also we always appreciate being able to access the museum to see artifacts that mean so much to our communities. I hope that there has been permission now that I am writing this! lol.
Highly recommended! You can see a precious mammoth specimen here.nOther animal exhibits are very lifelike, and the displays recreate the animals’ natural habitats.nnVisiting this place gives you a great understanding of Vancouver’s history, local wildlife, environment, and culture.nnThe lady at the front desk was very friendly — I’m really glad I came to visit!
