Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds Inc
"Rip Van Winkle Campground was started by Elton & Kay Johnson who were dedicated to their country, their community, and most of all their family. A lot has changed since 1966. What hasn’t changed is that the campground is still owned and operated by the same family and we are as dedicated to the same ideals, to each other and to you as Elton and Kay were."

We stayed at Rip Van Winkle one night. The sites are well shaded and spacious. The overall setting was very nice. There were deer roaming within the camping area that added a nice feeling of nature as well as squirrels, chipmunks and birds. We have a 38 ft Class A motorhome and navigating the roads wasn't bad.
This is my 5th time coming to Rip Van Winkle this year. The staff is amazing and the property is so beautiful. The owner takes pride in keeping the property so perfectly maintained. Their prices are more than reasonable. And I have to mention Alexis who works in the office. Checking in is always a breeze and Alexis makes you feel like an important customer because of her natural way of treating customers. So between the amazing grounds and amazing staff,Alexis specifically because she is such a sweetheart and pleasure to deal with, this is my new favorite escape from the loud city life and I will be back every year. Thanks Rip Van Winkle!
If you have a camper larger than 32' DON'T GO HERE. The roads are too narrow and winding... horrible for large units. The campground is beautiful but NOT big rig friendly. Entering the park is an absolute nightmare.
Update to the review below. Although this is indeed a gem, it is NOT big rig friendly! Even with the posted speed limit of 5 mph, it needs to be lowered to 2.5 mph while transporting your larger RV in AND out! Anything faster and you are very likely to scrape your rig against a tree. There are MANY beautiful trees, making the campground look spectacular. Sadly trees adjacent to the roads need to be removed to provide safe movement of large RV's, or just not allow larger RV's not recommended. I hate downgrading this review, but if it should give cause to making the campground more accessible, then so be it!!! Previous below review rating of 5 stars. This a gem! Just off the beaten trail and very aptly named. You could just pull up to a tree and go to sleep for twenty years. When we bought our former campground 16 years ago in Michigan, this is the look and feel of the campground I wish we'd bought. However, upon arrival in our 42 ft 5th wheel,it's quite apparent that all of the turns are tight... doable, but tight. When making my initial turn into the campground, I observed the office/checkin sign with an arrow pointing to the right. This seemed to imply to me that I needed to park to the right of the two car wide entry to avoid blocking the drive. In order to do this, with the space alloted, I needed to turn hard right to pull up to the office and not block traffic! In doing so, I put my 5th wheel at an angle on the incoming hill that caused my tailgate to gouge then underside of the front of the 5th slightly. I asked to talk to the owner, Brian, after we parked the RV. The first thing I told him was how nice of a park it was, then we discussed what happened. In the course of our discussion, we came across a solution... put up a sign to "Keep Left". This puts the incoming RV to the left of the driveway, let's incoming traffic pass easily AND faces the RV into the gate. Such an easy solution! Thanks Brian for listening!
Had a few issues but overall we enjoyed the stay. We especially enjoyed the heater 88° pool. Roads were tight with many turns for our 40' fifth wheel getting to our site but slow and easy was the way. The coin machine in the laundry broke on us so we had to keep going to the office to get change. The license plate reader to get into the park also failed on me twice. Our site was wide and clean. The kids liked All the fun zones but really enjoyed #1 and 2. Rips snack shack had some good food and was open all day, which was nice.
Loved this place! Beautiful well kept property. Lots to explore. Swimming hole and jumping off the rocks was the best. Lots of other neat stuff. Very dog friendly. Highly recommend!
Just completed our 6th Memorial Day holiday at Rip Van Winkle where we tent camp with a group of friends. It is always an absolute joy to be a guest here. The place is well maintained and has every amenity you would want when camping with a young family. It’s clear in every detail that the staff takes enormous pride in what they do. Can’t recommend this place enough.
NOT FOR FAMILIES! Beware of owners. TLDR; arrogant and ridiculous owners, biker gangs. We were "thrown out" because the owners claimed we "trashed the place". They wouldn't even let me use the restrooms before our long ride home. We must have been terrible gusts, right? This was shocking as we were two normal families who left the place more or less as we found it. Apparently in the end they took umbrage with the fact that we overlooked taking the garbage from the garbage can out and the curtain rod was out of place not broken, just not where it should be. For this, they found us by the fishing pond where the kids and I were hanging out since the morning while the other adults were packing up camp and demanded that we "leave the property immediately " basically threatening us, disturbing the kids and randomly accusing us of "trashing the place". Insane! Ruined the entire experience. Not to pile on, but it was very "coincidental" that a large group of bikers pulled up just as this began and then followed us into town... they were clearly friendly/chatting with the owner... No one threatened us but it was very odd - I'll leave it at that. As promised to the owner when I told him I will write this review, those are just the facts.
Unfriendly hosts. Watch out for their mood swings/lack of empathy. Kind of scary to stay there and be at their mercy. Obviously aren't interested in getting any new customers they must have enough regulars. Absolutely refused to let my family use the dump station when we really could have used it. Not very empathetic or nice at all. Looks like a great place but the hosts are not so nice.
First time taking out our travel trailer. We live like 45 minutes away and wanted somewhere close for our first trip. Very nice park. Large sites and very wooded. Tons of playgrounds for the kids. Small pool but also a swimming hole in the creek which was nice. Well stocked camp store. Nothing overly spectacular in terms of amenities but lots a different things to do. We will be back.
