Portage High School

Portage Highschool offers a wide selection of classes. It has an excellent theater program. Auto shop, metals shop, and wood shop. Very nice library.

I've been going to this school since Kindergarten, and it's been a pretty good school for me. There's a very good community around the school that supports the school very well. However, this last couple years the administration has completely destroyed a lot of the simple things that make the school a good learning environment, and I'm sure it's no different than any other school but they're not worried about education nearly as much as showing us what we need to know to pass standardized tests- and that's all they care about because that's how they get their money. I'm a Junior now and I'll be switching schools next year- I'm worried about how this school will go in the next few years because I have siblings that are in mid-elementary school that will be coming here eventually.

The best four years of my life were spent here, which is either a great review for the school or a horrible review of my life.

I don't know about rating this school now, but when I went there, it was the old building that is now the John Muir Elementary. That building was our high school, and I graduated in 1969. It was a decent school then, and I was glad to graduate and go on to college even though I should have gone to a junior college instead of a big 4-year one right away. It was the time of the Hippie movement, riots, flower children, panty raids, and a more relaxed atmosphere than today's zero tolerance for anything out of the ordinary. We did, however, dress better in some ways than they do now. The mascot seems to have changed a lot since I was there, but I guess it is more politically correct than the old one from the 60's and before.
