The Peterborough Clinic is the oldest continuously operating medical clinic in Canada, having been established in 1920.
It has earned the reputation of providing both high quality care and being innovators in the health care field. Family practice comprises approximately one-half of the thirty five member partnership; specialties represented include cardiology, internal medicine, pediatrics, gastroenterology, general surgery, obstetrics & gynecology, ophthalmology, and physiatry.
The Clinic is a great drawing card for patients. Our “one-stop medicine” ensures a loyal patient population and serves the needs of its physicians with readily available in-house medical services: Gamma-Dynacare medical laboratory, EKG, Cardiac Testing, Audiology, Physiotherapy, Orthotics, Knee bracing, Shockwave therapy, Mastectomy Care Products, Ultrasound, X-ray, and Pharmacy. The Clinic has a state of the art medical computer system including fully integrated electronic medical records. JonokeMed has been in operation at the Clinic since 1999.
The Peterborough Clinic is located directly across for the Peterborough Regional Health Centre. We comprise approximately a quarter of the over one hundred and twenty family physicians and specialists that serve the city and surrounding county.
Peterborough is located one and a half hours from Toronto and two hours from Kingston and is directly on the Trent Canal System and its interconnecting Kawartha Lakes. Sir Sandford Fleming College and Trent University provide a valuable resource for the community. Real estate is extremely reasonable and recreation opportunities abound.
The family physicians are remunerated as a Family Health Organization (“FHO”) and also enjoy the benefits of working in a Networked Family Health Team (“FHT”). The FHT includes nurse practitioners, registered nurses, social workers, dietician, pharmacist, and psychiatrist who are shared amongst all of the family physicians.
Arrangements for new physicians include no start up costs, computers in each office and financial incentives including a minimum guaranteed annual remuneration. This is a turnkey operation with all services in place for the new physician. The Clinic is situated in a new building designed for the FHT environment. The building is owned and operated by the physician partners and is located directly opposite the new hospital.
Family practice call is completed in-house and is shared among 18 physicians. In addition, the readily available resources of the in-house specialists are a great asset to any family physician. The Clinic facility includes medical lab, diagnostic imaging, pharmacy and other health care providers. Medical lab and diagnostic imaging are integrated in the medical computer system. Hospital privileges are an option, they are not required. The Clinic is professionally managed and boasts an excellent overhead cost ratio.
State of the Art Building
The Clinic relocated to their new state of the art 52,000 square foot facility located at 26 Hospital Drive in January 2008. The facility is home to forty physicians as well as many ancillary and complementary health care services for patients. The official opening occurred in August 2008 with many local dignitaries as well as representatives from the provincial and federal governments in attendance to officially open the new home of Canada’s oldest continuously operating medical clinic.
The new building is owned and operated by the physicians who practice in the building. The land was purchased from the City in 2006. The new facility offers expanded primary health care through the Family Health Team, specialist care and allied health services to residents of Peterborough City and County. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care leased space for allied health professionals associated with the Family Health Team. The majority of tenant services from the former location relocated to the new facility to continue the history of excellent service and “one-stop medicine”.
