First time trying the restaurant. The online menu is very different from the restaurant menu. The restaurant menu has less items and prices are a lot higher so be aware. We ended up having the beef noodle and Szechuan chili oil wontons. Nothing special and the beef noodle portion size really didn’t justify the $15 price tag. I also hate eating in disposable containers at a restaurant.
Decided to visit this place on a cold dark rainy day. To my surprise, the food is actually pretty good. I ordered the combo - braised pork with rice that come with seaweed soup and cucumber pickled. My friend ordered the schezuan chicken that come with rice. I also love the ambiance and the drawing on the wall. Next time I will try the jian bing for sure.
The coziest place to eat. Unimaginably hygienic with really good designs. As someone familiar with Taiwanese cuisine, Old Street impressed with simple, traditional flavors for a very good price. The wontons are just like wontons from home, and the meat sauces make me crave home. Wonderful.
not as fresh and portion smaller since last visit, happy hour only weekdays now, the noodles sad and soggy. however free parking and the service great always no line up today and the milk crepe was perfect temperature
The crepe is thicccccc I ordered a crepe with braised pork belly highly recommend with chinese donut and pork floss. Hefty chunks of meat and belly fat nicely braised and spiced, tasted amazing. Not so cheap but it was overwhelmingly delicious! Would come back
Taste: 6/10 Value: 6/10 House special Beef noodle: thick noodles were nice and chewy. Broth was mediocre. Only 1 piece of beef brisket sad and some hard tendon and chewy tripe. The brisket was ok. Would have wanted more brisket Spicy chicken nuggets: average. Spicy squid: average Overall, everything was average. we also ordered an old style crepe but it never arrived even after we finished the entire meal. We cancelled it.
I ordered the Taiwanese beef noodle soup. There wasn’t much flavor to the broth or the beef and vegetables but the beef was very tender and juicy. I went on my lunch break looking for something different than subway. Service was a little slow and robotic. I did not try their Chinese crepes which is something they are known for. Will go back to have the crepes.
Old Street is a relatively new Chinese eatery which opened up in the former Tokyo Tonkotsu Ramen location on Kingsway and specializes in street food items such as Chinese crepes and Taiwanese beef noodle soups. It looks like they haven’t done too much in terms of interior renovations other than to add the large mural on the wall which explains the type of food that they serve as well as the signage behind the counter. I’ve had Chinese crepes before and have never been a fan but I thought I’d give them a try anyways. When you’re placing your order, you check off the items that you want and how you want things customized. Each Chinese crepe is made with one egg, green onions, cilantro, and sesame. I opted for the White Flour Crepe $5.95 and added the HK-style BBQ Duck $6, Pickled Mustard Greens $1, Chinese Donut, and with a medium spice level. To that I added the Old Street Fresh Fruit Tea $5.50. What arrived at my table was a gigantic crepe served up similar to a burrito. The crepe is quite soft and I did enjoy how they mixed in the green onions, cilantro, and sesame in the wrapper. However, it makes it very difficult to eat as the crepe does not hold up well with the amount of filling inside. I think it would have been easier to eat if they took a cue from burritos/donairs which have tighter wrappers. As it was, after a few bites, the whole thing pretty much fell apart. As for the crepe itself, it was just okay. The Chinese donut was quite soft and I missed the textural component of a crispy Chinese donut. While the BBQ duck was meaty, I felt that it needed a bit of sauce to add to the flavour. Plus, I found it to be a bit too salty for my liking. The Fresh Fruit Tea was pretty good but somewhat on the sweet end. I returned a couple of weeks later to try their House Special Beef Noodle Soup $12.95 with braised beef flank, tendon, beef brisket, green onions, cilantro, and both veggies and pickled veggies. You have the option of various customizations and I opted for medium spice level and thin noodles. A couple of things that came to mind as I ate this: 1 medium spice is actually pretty spicy here, 2 the “thin” noodles that I requested didn’t really seem very thin but I haven’t tried their thick noodles so I’m not certain, 3 there was quite a bit of tendon in this dish as well as the addition of honeycomb tripe but I didn’t really see the beef brisket so I’m not certain if the items in this bowl were really correct or if the menu just lost something in the translation, 4 the braised beef flank along with all of the other meats were quite tender.
I came here to try their chinese crepe also known as jian bing. We got the cold noodles there, the jian bing crepes, the lou rou fan which is the taiwanese meat sauce with rice and lastly, the Szechuan style chicken. I don't know if I had come on a bad day or what was going on but seriously nothing had flavour at all. The deep-fried chinese doughnut inside the jian bing was soggy not crispy. My fiancé said that the jian bing at T&T was like 10X better than here. My lou rou fan was also tasteless and bland as if they forgot to add salt. The Szechuan style chicken was spicy but the pieces of chicken weren't juicy at all and it also just tasted bland with hints of spiciness. The dishes here are definitely a let down. The service here was worse, there was only one waiter working and about 5 tables of people dining here. He seemed extremely overwhelmed and forgetting. We had to ask for extra tea twice before he came around to top off our teas. Not really his fault for how busy it was but the owner needs to hire more staff so that things aren't being forgotten.
"Old Street" with great ambience. Clean, bright and spacious "little eatery". Very "informative" wall decorations. We ordered the Chinese Crepe with spiced beef and crisp fritte, House Special Noodle beef, tendon, tripe, and Diced Cucumber. The crepe was very delicious and quite filling. My favourite is the noodle soup. The "thick" chewy noodle was excellent, and the beef, tendon and tripe were very flavourful. There are a number of decent restaurants along Kingsway across from Metrotown, and "Old Street" definitely deserves a high ranking.
